@petunia354: hes doing great! We noticed a big mprovement sbout 3 months in and.now he.is talking a lot! Stringing words together like crazy. (Momma lights on. I did it.)He started.ei right after.he turned 2 and his therapist comes once a week. Hes almost 2.5 and he is really talking now (still behind but doing quite well) eihas helped so so much. The sessions. Are.just him and the therapist playing together while she.gives.me tips on how to help his speech. He has so much fun during their visits. Your lo will learn sp muxh from it and.dont feel guilty, honestly, i dont.think their is anything you csn do to prevent a speech delay but ei really does work. Ive seen it first hand. Good luxk to ypu and o, o know he will do great!

@stargal: Do you mind sharing how P is doing these days? Has the EI been helpful? Owen just turned 2 yesterday and was referred for a speech eval with our birth to 3 early intervention program today at his 2 year appt. His ped said by 2 he should have more words that we can count (he has maybe 15) and be stringing multiple words together (he is not). I remembered your post and I'm feeling a lot of the same emotions that you were. Feel free to wall me if you don't want to share publicly!

My daughter is a preemie and we do EI with her. She's been doing PT/OT since she was 4 months old for torticollis and hasn't stopped going since she has delays in more than one area (speech, motor, social). We've also added speech therapy and a class at the EI center. She does everything once a week.

It's often not something that the parents is or isn't doing, so don't beat yourself up! By doing EI, you're already a step ahead!

Feel free to wall me with questions.

We have been doing EI for a little more than a month for both physical therapy and feeding therapy (with a speech therapist).

As a special ed teacher, I knew that there probably wasn't anything we could have done to prevent our LO's issues, and I did okay during the evaluation, especially because I've been through so many of them with my students. But then the evaluator said, "And S needs to be 20% delayed to qualify for therapy and he is 40% delayed." (which, who knows where those numbers even come from, but whatever) And I definitely got a little teary thinking of how hard he will have to work to accomplish goals that come easily to most kids.

PT has been going so well, and he's doing a lot more things now than he was a few weeks ago. Our therapist is encouraging and knowledgeable. Feeding therapy hasn't been going as well, and we are doing a new consultation with a different therapist tomorrow. Don't be afraid to ask questions and switch therapists if you feel like he or she isn't a good fit.

Think about it like, you didn't fail or do something wrong. You're actually doing something right by getting your kid the support he needs now so that he won't have challenges later on, when it gets harder to help things.

I think EI can work wonders! We just finished with 3.5 months of PT due to a gross motor delay and my LO is now caught up. The support they provide was fantastic in my experience. It is wonderful to have someone who is an expert in whatever area your LO needs to teach YOU how to help them. It is really empowering and I bet you will be surprised at how quickly you will see a difference!

I started the process of getting LO an EI evaluation yesterday. I know she will qualify for speech and even with how much I'm trying to prepare myself, I'm sure I will cry when I officially hear the news. I try to focus on the fact that it's great that she will be getting help, but I can't stop feeling the guilt as well.

@stargal: I know exactly how you feel! My mom is dyslexic and I suffer from ADHD which we suspect with Tor. It can be very hard or learning but I think the younger its known and the more you raise someone understanding and supporting them the easier it is. With Tor his receptive language is good but sometimes he just tunes in to other things so much that he wouldnt even hear us. Well now after 3 months of EI I can't believe it! He is so much more responsive and the words! I'm telling you I am so impressed and you will be too and I will be equally proud of P! He is gonna do great. I don't just hope for that I KNOW it!

@PermaStudent: thanks! Ive been reading over te blog posts and they have been helpful!

@pinkb: glad to hear that your session went well, we should have our first one soon! I nervous but exited to learn some new stuff to help get P to talk more!

@jhd: thanks for your kind words! and your story about your bro offers a lot of hope and support.

@MrsMccarthy: aww T sounds like he is doing amazing! seriously letters and numbers, that blows my mind!!! is it weird that im proud of him!?!?!? I'm hoping P will improve with expressing himself. His receptive language is good, he understands everything but he's just not using words to express himself enough. He will say words so sporadically. The EI folks told me the same things, that it was way to early to worry/know about learning disabilities, but I cant help but wonder....I had one in school and although now I am grateful for it because it made me more mature and a better person, I don't think I will ever get over the insecurity and the embarrassment of it ( I never feel smart enough). I remember how embarrassed and how mean kids could be, and I don't want my sweet boy to feel that way.

@autumnlove: @Kimberlybee: @lilteacherbee: aww thank you guys so much

Oh and I want to add that it's way too early to know if this will have long term affects at all so try not to worry. I have the same worries you mentioned but then I see how loving and fun and sweet my boy is (and P, my god that kid is a love bug) and I worry less and less. It may just be a phase our kids grow out of or it may be something we work through with them. My MIL beautifully pointed out to me that she used o constantly worry about both of her children and she wishes she had a crystal ball to tell her that everything would be just fine and dandy.

@stargal: I felt the same way when R was recommended for EI for PT. I felt like I failed her. But PT has been so amazing for her that I'm so glad we took that leap of faith and called EI when we were told to. She has come so far in almost 5 months.

Girlie you KNOW it! We are in the same boat. Initially my Ts attention and receptive language were the only issue and speech was not. Now his attention and receptive language have improved amazingly but his speech while very good is still not quite where we want it. He has 50 words and communicates with us but he doesn't always use his words effectively or converse very well. He combines words here and there and he knows his entire alphabet and numbers to 10 but its weird he can say P or Pee Pee but when I ask him to say other words with p in them he throws out the P. anyway the point is that I believe EI was a HUGE key factor in helping us get so amazingly far! And it's kind of fun cause they play with your kid. Plus I learned so many techniques that we use at home. I'll bet you and P will have fun and see rapid results!!!

We are having an evaluation next Wed. so I don't have experience with my own LO yet, but my youngest brother was a preemie & needed lots of therapy. All of the people he worked with were wonderful and he made lots of progress. Please don't feel like you have failed. Some kids just need a little extra help and it's much better for your son to get that help as early as possible.

We just had our first speech appointment today! LO is 18 months with only 1 word. She qualified for both physical therapy and speech.
I was surprised how emotional I was just calling to start the process, I cried. But it has been great so far. Everyone really seems to explain things very well, and they really just love the kids. Today at our first appointment she was very clear on what our expectations should be and our goals and the plan to get there.

You are not failing at all! This is why we get  them help early so they wont have those struggles later in life. You are doing everything right!!

Please don't feel like you have failed him - because you haven't! Focus on the fact that you are doing everything that you can right now, and take it one day at a time.

We just had Pierson (just turned 2) evaluated and he qualfirs for services. He did great in all 4 areas except for speech, particularly his lack of words. Were starting speech therapy soon but I'm a little overwhelmed and emotional about it. I feel guilty like in failed him and I really don't want him to struggle in life and I worry about the future with learning disabilities and such. I admit I cried a little when they told me even though I was expecting it.

Would love to hear your experiences with it.
