DH's sister has gastroparesis (onset at only 20 and diagnosis not until she was 24). It is rough on her. She controls it mostly with diet and stress management. She takes reglan periodically to combat aggressive flare-ups, but not continually to avoid the side effects and long-term potential damage.
I can't say enough how much stress affects her disorder. Happy, exciting stree or busy-life stress, or hard, sad stress - it all affects her physiologially the same way. Just having this kind of a medical condition at such a young age was enough to get her into therapy to talk about it and get some help with how to better manage her anxiety (in general and about this condition).
So, my long story about my SIL is really just to suggest that though dietary changes help tremendously. I 100% recommend looking into some kind of method to manage the stress that comes with having chronic medical conditions and the effect that stress often has on the conditions themselves.

Reglan has warning temporary side effects before some of the nastier long term ones kick in. A reasonable approach could be to do a month long trial of the reglan while making diet changes etc. Try to kick start the stomach into squeezing properly

Thanks ladies! My husband's already jacked up enough from several other body aches & pains that his quality of life is already compromised. The idea of what this medication "could do" is just terrifying. We will defiantly be doing more research & consults before just jumping to to start this.

I think the doc is exaggerating the effects of reglan... But if that's not a viable option... He can suggest erythromycin which helps with gastric emptying. There are options.

I have a cousin who has this problem (she is 30). She never got it solved, but has learned how to eat to make herself comfortable. I think seeing a nutritionist and/or Naturopath would be a great step. It may all be related to some food allergies, which are easily avoided. Those drugs sound scary!

There is a medication called Erythromycin but it isn't FDA approved for gastroparesis, although I have heard that it works great. Over all it would consist of diet changes, weight loss (if applicable) and exercise. I hope this regimen can help so that he can avoid medications!

DH got diagnosed with severe delay in gastric emptying & a nasty hiatal hernia on top of his GERD. It takes more thank 24 hrs for food to pass through his stomach when a normal stomach should be empty with in aprox 30 min.

The Dr. wants to put him on Reglan which is the only FDA approved medication to treat gastroparesis symptoms & help the stomach contract to digest food. Unfortunately the side effects are NASTY and could have a life long debilitating effects. The Dr. even said he hates to prescribe this medication to younger adults because of the side effects. He prefers to use it on the elderly who are closer to the end of life stages.

I don't want DH on this medication but if things are left untreated he effects can be just as great on his body & he could end up needing pureed diet or even a feeding tube. BUT I'd rather he have a purred diet or feeding tube than turn into a vegetable!

He is having a physical done to look at other underlying factors such as diabetes which may have caused this. We are changing his diet & I will be setting up an appointment with a nutritionist to help explain things more to him. I'd like to take a more natural approach until we get to talk with the Dr. a little more about it.

So there is my story. Does anyone have experience with this? I'd love to hears some success stories.
