@Maysprout: that's what I've been doing- pull the top lip out and it's fine. It's just when I don't (like MOTN when I'm a zombie) that it's uncomfortable. Thanks for the tip about the blood haha

@BelugaBean: @oliviaoblivia: @pastemoo: @Iced Tea: thanks everyone! Glad to hear of others who have not had to have it revised. I definitely don't want him to have an unnecessary procedure. He has 4 teeth already so maybe a dentist appointment in the next couple weeks wouldn't hurt just to make sure about the gap.

@pastemoo: my nephew also busted his around the same age! Ouch.
@BelugaBean: that's interesting about the gap giving space for the adult teeth!
@Iced Tea: that's a great point about the compensatory strategies.

Both my girls have one but my second has a bigger one than my first. I had to pull her upper lip out for her to nurse well at first but then she did fine. The LC recommended getting it cut, the peds and dentist said meh - so we didn't. The only thing we were warned about was that if it gets busted from a fall it's bloody.

I don't know much about the connection between ties and reflux. I would try to find out more.

As far as breastfeeding pain, I doubt clipping the ties would help much at this late stage. He would have already developed compensatory habits that he's unlikely to change. My LO had revision at 10 weeks, and that was considered on the late side (for helping breastfeeding anyway).

Lip ties almost always come with a tongue tie (but the reverse is not true), btw.

The revision was hard on my daughter. I would only do it again if I was pretty confident that it would alleviate a painful condition or if it was a last ditch effort to save our breastfeeding relationship.

@peaches1038: I'd talk to the dentist. I had mine revised when I was 5 and I remember it. That is the dentist's domain because it may or may not be a problem.
My son had it but busted it during a fall when he was 3, so no surgery for him! Also, he might not have needed it. Some level of tissue there is normal.

My second had a lip tie like that. Nursing was fine. I talked with her pediatrician and pediatric dentist and they weren't alarmed at all.

Both of my girls have this. LO1 is four now and we've had no issues from it. She nursed just fine when she was a baby, speaks just fine, and her doctor said the gap may actually help when her adult teeth come in. DH had one and had to have it cut eventually so I'm not sure if she will, too. LO2 has a bigger gap so I'm curious to see how it affects her. She also had a high palate at birth and was never able to latch comfortably.

DS is almost 10 months old and I'm pretty certain he has a lip tie. He is currently on Zantac for reflux and nursing has always been a bit uncomfortable for me. I've been reading that lip ties can contribute to reflux. Not one of the handful of medical professionals had ever looked in his mouth (lactation consultant, 2 pediatricians and the pediatric pulmonologist we see). I'm curious if anyone has any experience with a revision this late in the game and what effect, if any, this might have on his dental alignment or speech.
