I think it's a slight different test than the routine blood work, but my guess is that they tested for it when you became pregnant. Pregnancy can actually cause a decrease in platelets, so I know they must look for it. If you haven't heard anything about it, then you're probably fine!

I discovered that I had it when I was around 13. I was taking acutane for my acne and I had to go in every month to get my blood taken and tested. It was during that initial test that my dermatologist was all "Hey.... did you know you have a low platelet count?" But I know that every time I've had blood drawn in recent years, they tell me my platelet count is low and I'm all "Yeah, I know."

I think ITP only occurs is like 2-3% of the population, so it doesn't surprise me you've never heard of it. I had never heard of it until I found out I had it, haha.

i've never actually heard of itp - how do they even know to check for it? is it caught in routine blood work?

i'm carrying twins and i've heard they're higher risk and stuff develop so i'm just crossing my fingers that nothing comes up but i'll guess time will tell.

So this is kind of random, but I'm curious if anyone else has ITP (immune thrombocytopenic purpura). Basically I have an abnormally low platelet count (around 70,000). The norm is between 140,000 and 350,000.

I had a hematology visit today to discuss my ITP. Apparently it can affect a pregnancy, specifically during delivery, but my hematologist didn't really going into the details, since I'm not currently pregnant or even trying.

Anyone else have ITP or other disorders that might affect pregnancy?
