Definitely rest and lay low but keep in mind that if it spikes, you should go to the hospital. 160 seemed to be the magic number for my docs. This is when they started to panic.

Thanks so much for your stories! It makes me feel not so alone! My BP is hovering around 147/87 anytime I'm up and active versus laying down. Since my OB's office is closed until Wednesday and I've already been to the hospital once this weekend, I'm trying to just keep track of my BP throughout the day and rest when possible.

Around 30 weeks I swelled up suddenly - like left my house in heels and by 10am my feet were swollen up and out of them. My coworkers thought it was funny but I called my OB just to check and my blood pressure was crazy high. They kept an eye on it and just told me take it easy. By 37 weeks I was hospitalized because of the trifecta of high BP, protein in urine, low platelets. They told me to be prepared for a csection that day but because at rest everything evened out over 24 hours, I was sent home on very strict bedrest. Only up for bathroom breaks and stairs once a day. You know I didn't stick to that, but that's what I was told to do. And I didn't leave the house except for appointments and that was reeeally hard for me. I had weekly NSTs and BPPs until they induced me a day after my due date. My blood pressure stayed high after delivery and I needed an IV for over 24 hours.
I guess what surprised me about pre-e was that I could never tell that I had high BP. I never felt sick or dizzy. The only thing was the swelling. I gained a ton of water weight super fast and that was when my pregnancy took the turn from normal to PIH/pre-e.

I had pregnancy induced hypertension that never turned into pre-e, even though they continually tested me for it. It's a long story so please bear with me. :)

I am not sure of the exact timeline, but I want to say I was diagnosed around 32-33 weeks. I had gone on a business trip to NY, and had a very traumatic train ride home - pushy people in Penn Station, lifting suitcase overhead, late night, etc. I felt shaky and sick when I got home. Looking back, I bet my blood pressure was spiked but I had no idea at the time it was an issue. It had read a little high the entire time (128/70) but since it always hung around this figure, the doctor was fine with it. I didn't even think about to be honest. Three days after my business trip I still didn't feel right - a bit dizzy, spots in my eyes, and like I was coming down with something. I called the doctors just to check in because I really did just feel crappy and I knew either something was up, or I was coming down with something. They asked if I had swelling, which I did - a TON of it, and they had me come in. My blood pressure read 145/80 and they sent me right to triage at the hospital where they took my blood and tested my urine. My urine came back "2" which, as I was told, is "maybe". One is no, three is yes, and two is maybe. My platelet count came back normal but because of the "maybe" and the facial swelling I had, they sent me home to do the 24hr pee-test. I came back negative and at my follow up appt at the doctor's office they diagnosed me with the hypertension and advised their normal course of action was to put me out of work. Not bed rest so to speak, but no working and taking it easy. I still felt really crappy and my swelling was getting so much worse, even in my face, so I agreed. I asked if I could I could work a few more days to wrap up a few things and they had no problem with it. This was a Friday. I went to work on Monday and told my boss that Wed would be my last day. I went for my normal appointment that day at 3pm and my blood pressure read high again, I think over close to 160 for the top number, and they sent me right to the hospital again.

At the hospital I had another reading with the top number close to 160 and they admitted me for monitoring. Another 24 hour pee-test, blood work, blood pressure monitoring, etc and again, I tested negative for pre-e and they discharged me. I followed up at the doctor's office and they told me I'd need to come in twice a week for an ultrasound/fluid test, and non-stress test for the baby in addition to my normal once a week visit. I had another couple of times with high blood pressure readings where they sent me to the hospital. Usually if I rested for a bit my pressure would come back down. They'd continually test me for pre-e, but I never turned. I was older though, 38, and had some serious swelling so they were always concerned about it. The last trip to the hospital was at 36 weeks and it was my second reading over 160. They were going to take her that day except relaxing in bed helped drop it back to the 135 range. I was told because it dropped they would let me continue a bit longer but I was to take it easy and just rest. Normally they would have admitted me but they trusted me enough to go for testing every other day at the doctor's office, which was only 5 minutes from my house. They then scheduled me for my c-section on July 5th, 37 weeks and 1 day.

I made it to that day no problem and amazingly enough, my blood pressure was back to normal while I was in the recovery room. The last few weeks with the high blood pressure was really tough and I could feel my body struggling. Resting really was the only thing that kept my pressure low.

I had pregnancy induced hypertension but not pre e. Like a few others, had to do a magnesium sulfate drip, epidural causes my blood pressure to crash, and I had to stay on the mag drip 12 hours post delivery which was a huge pain.

Blood pressures were high in all of third tri and had tons of swelling and massive weight gain (40 lbs in third tri alone) but no protein in urine after doing the 24 hour catch and blood work showed things were escalating but not pre e officially. I made it passed my due date so he induced at 40 weeks 5 days.

I ended up with pre e, but high blood pressure wasn't the first symptom for me. I went in for a nst at 33 weeks 4 days & my blood pressure was normal. The only reason they suspected something was that I had protein in my urine & I complained of slight swelling over the previous week. As the day went on my blood pressure started to skyrocket & my blood work was all wonky. I was given mag sulfate & they ended up doing an emergency csection that night.
My ob said I was at higher risk for pre e being pregnant with twins. Don't be afraid to call your ob if you're feeling off!

My blood pressure was high at a few appts but my doc would have me lay down and rest in the exam room for ten minutes and that would always get me back down to normal. I definitely suggest trying to focus on taking it easy and not allowing yourself to get too stressed or over exerting yourself.

I had PIH, but not diagnosed pre-e. I had high BP's noted as early as the first tri, then went down in the 2nd tri, but as soon as I hit about 26 weeks the BP's went up again. I ended up on meds, monitoring my BP's 4x per day, my doctor made me stop working at about 34 weeks and I wasn't allowed more than 30 minutes of activity at a time. It never turned into pre-e, but I did have a lot of monitoring, and ended up induced and a c-section due to cord blood flow issues from the PIH.

I had high BP, but not diagnosed pre-e. Somewhere in the mid-20's (weeks) I started going to afternoon Dr. appointments due to scheduling conflicts, and my BP was always too high. I did weekly appointments for a while and the 24 hour urine collection and everything came back fine.

I started morning appointments again, and BP was fine. I just got Dr's orders to take it easy in the afternoons, no rushing around anywhere like I had been doing to finish work for the day and make it to my appointments on time.

I started getting migraines the last couple weeks, but they didn't catch any excessively high BP readings until my water broke. Labor was quick, and BP returned to normal within a couple days. No real management for me, other than keeping a close eye out.

@Boogs: I don't think I've been doing anything more than normal, but maybe with the holidays, I have without realizing it or something. I'm really going to try to take it as easy as I can tomorrow and Tuesday since I don't have to work. I'll see if that helps.

My blood pressure started going up at about 32 weeks and at 36 weeks my highest was 150/90. Went to the hospital, had all the tests and everything came out negative. I haven't developed pre-e or hypertension. My BP went down to normal from there and we chalked it up to stress/anxiety, which I was feeling a lot of at the time. I've been taking it very easy, mostly staying home on the couch and I'm now 37.5 weeks and BP is normal again.

My blood pressure was completely normal throughout pregnancy and no protein. So no experience there..
As soon as I went into labor though my blood pressure was through the roof and i got diagnosed in the delivery room with pregnancy induced hypertension.

They put me on a magnesium sulfite IV to lower my blood pressure. Once i got the epidural my blood pressure dropped too much and they had to give me epinephrine to raise it.

My blood pressure was so unstable that they wanted me to have a c section (my guess is that you will be having one anyway bc of twins)

The mag iv made me vomit alot, and i had to continue with the iv treatment for 24 hours post partum.

Because i was still being treated after the delivery, i was in a special recovery ward and baby had to stay in the nursery. No skin to skin or rooming in at the beginning.

Hopefully you will be fine and no re-e!

I had PIH during the last 10 weeks. It did turn into pre-e and I was on bed rest to avoid that. OB didn't officially diagnose the pre-e until delivery when my bp's were off the chart.

Yes, I had high BP during my pregnancy but it didn't develop into pre-e. I think I'm borderline normally, but it steadily rose during pregnancy, so it was pregnancy-induced hypertension.

My doctor had me regularly monitor BP at home and watched my urine closely. I had to do a 24-hour test once, where you pee into a jug for an entire day and they analyze that -- fun! But never had protein. I also had to go in a few more times than normal so they could watch me. They also decided to induce at 39 weeks because of the BP -- though my LO still beat them to the punch by a few days.

Anyway, moral of the story ... high BP does NOT equal pre-e, but it does mean you should just watch yourself and pay attention for really freakish swelling or sudden, SHARP headaches and that kind of thing.

After my post about what preeclampsia headaches feel like, I ended up taking my blood pressure, and it was 144/85. Per my doctor's instructions, I went to the hospital to get checked out for pre-e since my doctor's office is closed until after the holiday. Naturally, by the time they took my BP (I had been laying down for about 30 minutes by then), it was down to a completely regular reading. I also had no protein in my urine. I'm at 26 weeks, and the resident in the hospital told me that pre-e generally doesn't develop until at least 28 weeks. I figured my earlier reading was a fluke, and I was so relieved. But today, I took it again and it was 147/87 on both my BP cuff at home and the machine at CVS.

Did anyone have high blood pressure during pregnancy without it developing into pre-e? If so, how did your doctor treat you? If you did eventually get pre-e, did you initially have high blood pressure without protein in the urine? Just looking to hear anyone's stories about high BP during pregnancy whether you developed pre-e or not. Thanks!
