it looks like the plastic one is geared for younger kids. It's bright and colorful and has other flaps and such that babies 9-12 months enjoy. The wooden one is solely for shape sorting and is plain jane compared to the plastic in terms of colors and sensory nubs on the shapes.

DS has it. He's had it since he was about 8 or 9 months and would play with the blocks (bang them together, chew, etc) but since around 17 months he has shown an interest in actually putting the shapes through the holes. He's going on 20 months and he is getting better and better. He really enjoys it. The only negative is the wood splinter thing.. But DH sanded it down a bit and it's been great

The recommendation might be about mouthing more than anything. I've found the paint on our Melissa and Doug toys comes off pretty easily, so it's not great for kids who still chew things.

T has the wooden barn sorter. It's 2+ and he's 10 months. I think it's just skill reasons, although he smashed his finger in the lid once

My dd has loved the wooden one since 1 year old and at 2 can do it herself. I think it's fine for younger years.

I agree that it's probably a skill recommendation. The only safety issue I had was the possibilty of wood splinters.

I like it. My LO stacks them and her favorite shape is the quatrefoil! She's had it since her 1st birthday. She's 2 now.

We have it and I agree it's 2+ for skill. Honestly I don't love it. The side that removes to get the blocks out does not stay put. A lot of shapes are similar and some pieces fit through more than one hole. Probably better options out there!

We have it, and it's probably just 2+ for skill reasons. L is almost 2 and still can't get the shapes through the holes. It's perfectly safe to chew on though - nothing able to get stuck in the mouth!

I would go with common sense. I think sometimes toys are "rated" for older kids, but are perfectly safe for younger ones. I was thinking of getting that same sorter when DD is around 10 months-1.5 and would not be worried.

I bought the wooden one last night for DD and didn't realize that it was recommended for ages 2+. It doesn't seem to have any small parts so I don't see why DD (who will be 9 months at Christmas) can't use it. The plastic one, which I saw at the store, is recommended for 9-12 months. The shapes seem to be about the same size for both versions. Am I missing something? All I can think of is that the wooden one has hard corners, but DD can sit up very well and I don't see her bonking her head on it very easily. Does anyone have it and think the 2 year recommendation is accurate?

Here is the wooden one: http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Shape-Sorting-Cube/dp/B00005RF5G

Here is the plastic: http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Take-Along-Shape-Sorter/dp/B00EYTM9IY/ref=sr_1_2?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1418764413&sr=1-2&keywords=melissa+and+doug+shape+sorter
