@LazyLightning: Awesome!! That sounds exactly like what I had - 99% for trisomy 13, 18, and 21. So glad you had it done!!!

After MUCH doctor drama I won't go in to (I found out they werent even going to DO any tests in 3 weeks, just chat with me and then order tests for after new years--oh HELL NO), I managed to get myself in for Verifi TODAY. T

The genetic counselor told me this blood test is basically the 'next level' above the first tri screening and/or quad screening. It can detect downs within 99%, and Trisomy 18 or 13 within nearly as high of percentages. So if it comes back negative (especially with Down's) -- you're basically good to go.

If it comes back positive or "inconclusive", you would be recommended to get either an Amnio (afte 15 weeks) or CVS (11-13 weeks 6 days) to determine what's up. Also, no increased miscarriage risk with a blood test, whereas there is some association with those 'invasive' tests.

To have the test: I went in to the doctor's office, and met with my genetic counselor who went over why my first tri screen result was higher than they'd hoped. (I have a high level of protein HcG--I think that's what he said, at least-- 1.8 when it should have been around 1). Then they explained that I might have to pay up to $500 (or more), but it would probably be $200 if my insurance outright denies it.

They gave me a little box that looks like the kind a new cell phone would come in, and I took the box to the lab where the tech unpacked it. Then she took a vial of my blood and packed it up in the box and took it away. That's it.

The "official" wait time is "around 2 weeks", but I was told by my genetic counselor that they generally are getting results of these in 4-6 days, and he'd call me when they came in.

I will update with the results or what it told me when I find out. But I hope this helps anyone who is interested.

@Revel: I think you might be thinknig Quad Screen? That's what I was told i get at 16 weeks, regardless of risks. Hmmmm.

Then maybe it is different. With my test they do it at 10 weeks and its as accurate as amnio, but only tests for trisomy 13, 18, and 21, but no turners.

@LazyLightning: I hope you get a call back from the doctor soon!

@Revel, it's the quad test they take blood for at week 16.

Check on the accuracy of the tests...for me, my doctor told me that it was only about 90% accurate but the CVS was 99%. I don't think this is what everyone is told (I know JoJo was told otherwise). It definitely swayed my choice.

Is Verifi the second set of blood work they do around 16 weeks? As part of my NT we had the scan at 12 weeks, and they took blood. I got the results of that like 5 days later, and had to make an appointment for the blood work around 16 weeks, which I'll do in December. She said that after that I will get updated probabilities, and it also tests for another condition - maybe spina bifida?

For myself, if I could handle the waiting, with the understanding that I might still need the amnio, I would probably wait for the second set of bloodwork in case the first result was a false positive. My understanding is that it presents a more accurate picture.

OTOH, I am not very patient and might just want the conclusive results from the amnio ASAP.

I'm so thankful to live in a world where this technology exists!! We waited almost 2 full weeks for results, but having that kind of accuracy on a blood test was nothing short of miraculous. If you have that as an option, do it. No risk of m/c and same rate of accuracy a amnio.

They suggested the Verifi test for me since it also tests for Turners Syndrome, but I opted for a CVS. I believe with all tests, you can get a FSH assay back in 48 hours, then full results a week or two later.

@JoJoGirl: I think it's the same. Just a different company that makes it. How was the process with getting results, etc?

Is that the same as the MaterniT-21 test? I had that - DNA test from blood. Not sure if its the same though?

It's a blood test that can be done instead of CVS or Amnio. I'm sitting here with my increased risk of downs, waiting for my doctor to call me back and tell me which he recommends: Amnio or Verifi.

Verifi isn't invasive like amnio but (according to some googling i did) may still mean you have to have an amnio. Guess I'm just wondering anyone else's experience with it.
