@honeybee - yeah, we def talked about the fact that DH will probably be the one to put #2 to bed... at least for a little while. i'll just have to be diligent about pumping enough for each night!

Would love to hear your strategy. Right now, my husband is campin out in his room at night. We actually decided to switch him to the toddler bed because husband is sleeping in there anyway. Nap time have transitioned brilliantly though. I hang out in his room for a little while to play or read books then I'll leave and he'll get into his bed and sleep.

@msmom: Do you think your DH might be able to put #2 down for the night without you? If you're comfortable giving a bottle for that feeding, that might be a solution that allows you to stay with your DD.

Right now, DH and I kinda divide and conquer, so I usually put DS down and he takes DD; on the nights when I have to put both kids to bed by myself, I let DD hang out in her room by herself for about 20 minutes while I put DS to bed, and then I go back in to lay down with her. On these nights she always gets to bed later, but at least both kids get the time/attention they need before bedtime.

@honeybee - I know what you mean about CIO! My neighbor keeps telling me we just need to let her CIO before baby#2 comes because there's definitely no way I'll be able to lay down with her for 40 min to an hour with an infant. I know she's right but M is in daycare and I just feel bad already about not being with her all day. It's much harder when they're 2.5 years old and talking. But I know I'm really in for it.. when the baby comes, there will be tears no matter what. She's ok if I'm in the room without her dad but if her dad's in there without me, she will cry for me. Looking forward to that post, Mrs. Bee!!

Actually, DD's routine shortneded quite a bit once we moved her to her toddler bed; she's been going through a separation anxiety phase lately, though, and that means DH spend at least 1.5 hours putting her to bed each night. :( We could shorten it by letting her CIO, but neither of us have the heart for that, so he stays with her until she falls asleep each night.

DD is 27 months and her routine has gotten a bit longer because of teeth brushing, flossing, and sitting on the potty. Otherwise it is the same but we still have her in a crib. We'll going to move her into a twin bed in the fall so let's see what happens then.

Would LOVE to hear how you got it back down to 30min!!! M used to fall asleep in her crib on her own but at around 18months, we somehow started to lay down with her to fall asleep.. I dont even remember why it happened but now we have to both lay down with her until she falls asleep. Then we move her into her crib and she doesnt wake til morning but since i am 8 mons pregnant this obviously has to stop!!! Last night we turned out the lights at 745 and she didnt fall asleep until 9!!!! Craziness..

We put Charlie in a toddler bed around 28 months, which probably contributed to his bedtime routine getting out of control and starting to take hours.

Inevitably, Bee or I would fall asleep while putting him down and would wake up next to him hours later. We'd either not be able to get back to sleep, or we'd be too tired to get any work done. It caused a huge drop in our productivity and happiness.

This week I finally figured out how to get Charlie's bedtime routine back down to half an hour (more on that later). It's been amazing! Anyway it got me thinking: have any of you guys wrestled with your LO's bedtime routines suddenly becoming long/difficult around this age? And if so, how have you dealt with it?
