I understand there are two kinds of croup, but I haven't really researched it to know the differences.

My son had a mild case a few weeks ago, no treatment required. What should I be looking for?

@Rubies: yikes, I know my niece has had issues with this and how scary it is/can be! They too have a standing prescription for steroids. Glad you're home safe, hope this is the last instance for you both!

DS has had it twice. We ended up at the ER both times. They gave us a single dose steroid for him and he was better within a few days. We also ran a cool mist humidifier while he was sick and gave him Tylenol/Motrin as needed for fever.

Hope Baby Rubies feels better soon! I know that cough is scary!

My three year old gets croup often enough that we have a standing prescription for oral steroids.

Treatment: cool moist air, then steroids. Racemic epinephrine if necessary. Stridor at rest is always an emergency.

DS had croup around 7 months. He had the bad croupy cough, but his overall breathing was ok. Nurses connection told us to go into the ER, his cough cleared up as we drove because of being in the cool night air. At the ER they gave him a breathing treatment but said to try sitting in the bathroom with the shower running hot, then go outside into the cool air or stand in front of the freezer with the door open. I will definitely do this in the future before going to the doctor.

Lorelei did last winter around Christmastime. She got a ride in the ambulance. Her breathing stopped completely for close to a minute and we were really scared. We did humidifier, she slept on my chest almost totally upright because of the mucous, we did albuterol treatments in our nebulizer as needed, and since it was cold outside, if it got really awful we took her out in the cold air. It was miserable. I would recommend going in and having her seen; it's no joke, and anything that they can do to help is wonderful. I hope she is over it soon.

I had croup a few times when I was young. Sitting in the bathroom with a hot shower running helped. The steam would loosen everything up and I could cough it out. I don't remember going to the doc, but I wasn't that young, so I would probably take her. On the other hand, my brother got it before he was a year old, ended up in the hospital for his 1st bday, and has had hearing problems ever since.

If you suspect something like that, take her to the doctor! I thought DS had croup, his breathing was really fast, and when I called the nurse line they got me in as soon as they could that day and said if it got worse to go to the ER.

He got some breathing treatment (I think it was steroids) at the doctors office and that helped a lot!

Without seeing a doctor (yet) but by reading online, I'm certain my 2-year old has croup.

Her behaviour is still good, thank goodness, but her cough, the breathing, and hoarseness of her voice is so sad! What worked for you to help soothe?
