LO is in our room for a multitude of reasons, including decreased risk of SIDS, ease of breastfeeding and diaper changes, and my own peace of mind. He will probably stay in there with us for 6 months to a year. Everybody is different though... You've gotta do what gets you and baby the most rest!

We have LO in our room. Besides ease of nursing and dipe changes (he is up 2-3 times a night), the decreased SIDS risk is a big reason. He also has some reflux, so having him near me reassures me that if he's spitting up, I can help him.

@illumina: I'm not TTC yet, but I've wondered this from seeing friends go through the process.

Yep, totally. LO just moved out of our room/bed at 10.5 months.

The reason it lowers the SIDS risk (research has been done) is because hearing mom & dad breathe leads to synchronization and "teaches" baby how to breathe in their sleep in those crucial first months.

We're going to try to have our LO sleep in her room at night, with me on a double bed that will be in there for the first several weeks. But every baby is different so I know we'll just have to see what works!

We have LO in our room at night, and napping in her nursery during the day. Our bedroom gets very warn in the afternoon, so I wanted her in her cooler nursery. Also, she will be at daycare, so I wanted to start creating associations between light/daytime and napping, and her room is much brighter during the day. So far, so good!

We planned to put her in her own room right from the start, but when she was born our opinions changed. There was no way we could put her in a room by herself!!! I just couldn't. She slept in a bassinet in our room for 4 weeks.

Right now we're likely only planning to have the baby in our room for the first few weeks (if even that many) and then will directly transition him to his room, which is right next to ours. I've been tempted to put him in his crib right from the beginning but I'm really not sure. I'm such a light sleeper that I think it'll be worse for both of us to share a room for very long though.

I've read that having baby near you while sleeping helps regulate their breathing.

It's definitely easier to get them up to eat, too! I just bring him to bed and side-lie nurse. If I had to sit up in a chair for half an hour at 3am, I'd want to kill someone.

LO is 5 months and still in our room (in his crib).

C was in her nursery from 2 weeks old. Next time, the baby will go in the nursery from the beginning.

We all slept better that way. Her noises and grumbles and such just kept me awake all night and I never got any sleep. The nursery is right next to our bedroom. It's probably a 10-15ft walk from my bed to her crib, so it really wasnt a big deal.

We're planning to have LO in the nursery from the beginning. It's just across the hall from us and we put a twin bed in there as well. So if necessary, I'll sleep there. I know hubby will never sleep a wink if the baby rooms in with us.

We will have the baby in our room at the beginning. I've read that it is recommended because of the reduced SIDs risk (possibly something about baby regulating breath to mom's or something?) but mostly we will do it for convenience. I know I'll be up and down with the baby a lot and would rather not have to walk to another room. Plus, we have our moms coming to stay with us and the nursery and guest room are one in the same so it's just easier to keep baby with us.

If the nursery was right next to ours I wouldn't be as concerned but it's about as far away as you can in a 2 bedroom apartment. I am guessing the baby will be with us for the first 3 months or so, unless I start sleeping in the baby's room with him or her (we have a queen bed in there). But I'd hate to not share a bed with DH!

The first 6 weeks we were sleeping all over the house however we could. Sometimes she would tolerate the swing, but mostly it was on our chests. But most of the time that was out on the couch or guest room so that the other person could get good rest in our bedroom.

Once she was okay with sleeping in the bouncy seat on a regular basis, we still slept in the living room together (me on the couch, and her next to me in the bouncy seat. And then we moved her and the bouncy seat to her room. Then we removed the bouncy seat and put her in the crib.

It was a process, but totally successful. She has been sleeping in her own room since 6 weeks.

We had our DS sleep in his own crib from the get go. His bedroom is super close ours, so having to get up for all the feedings wasn't an issue for us, and we always had the baby monitor on. I don't know if being in his own room from the beginning directly contributed to easier sleep training, but he was sleeping through the night by 2 months and has always been a really solid sleeper. Also I think it's good for you and the hubby to have your own space!

I've had Vi in our room from the beginning and we'll keep her with us for awhile yet.

I don't know all the reasons that it is recommended, but I know that except in the case of parents who are smokers, the SIDS risk is lower for babies who room share with their parents.

I have had my LO in our room for 12 weeks now and it's working out great. One reason is a reduced risk of SIDS. I also like having him close because I breastfeed and don't want to go back and forth between different rooms in the middle of the night. We also live in a small two bedroom apartment for now.

I had Baby A in her room at night from the beginning. It has worked well for us. I admit, the first few nights I slept on the couch in the nursery. And her room is right next to ours, so she's not very far away. I think it has been great for DH's and my sleep. We were recently visiting family and LO (6 months) was in a pack and play in the same room with us, and she constantly woke both of us up.

I would invest in a video monitor. It does wonders to ease your mind to be able to see the baby without disturbing him/her.

When I was pregnant with S, this was the plan, cause we had a 2 bedroom apartment and DS was in the 2nd one. We only planned on staying in the apartment for a short while, so we thought it was silly to get a 3 bedroom when for 6 months she wasn't even born yet...and we were going to move shortly after she was born.

Can't say anything about the success of it, though. We have a 3rd bedroom in this house in case another baby comes along...but we might keep it in our room in the beginning anyways.

At the moment we are. It's what my parents did with my Sister and I and they always said it was the best thing for helping to sleep train from the start. I guess I always thought it was normal until reading in books recently that it's recommended babies sleep in the same room as parents for the first 6mths.

Is there a particular reason for this- other than ease of getting up for night wakings/feedings?

Has anyone successfully left their baby in their own room from the beginning?
