I did but I didn't get to choose my own topic to study. I basically assisted the grad students who were working on a research study with the professor. It was a psychology study.

I majored in Marine Science and did an independent research study on the changes in salinity and the effects on C. sapidus respiration rates. Another student and I also did study for the Geology department utilizing GIS.

@MrsLilybugg: my thesis was on political economy and homelessness. A bit less traditional, but I did my research in town which was great. And I loved it!

What about something like looking into Mayan influences on modern South American culture?

@bunnylove08: ooh that sounds interesting.
@mrbee: wow!! I'd never have even thought of a system like that! it must have been fun
@Maysprout: lol - that could apply to anthro too I think!
@bunnylove08: this is a neat idea... hmmm
@jedeve: oh nice!! What did you focus on for your Master's? So my true love is archaeology, specifically Maya. (My favorite class was The Rise and Fall of the Maya.) But I also love cultural anthropology. I just took a sociocultural theory class and I enjoyed reading the ethnographies and writings of Boas, Malinowski, etc. I found that very very interesting.

If your major is cultural anthro. I think it would be cool to see a comparison of family units in different cultures, or how different cultures raise their children. I would narrow it down to two or three cultures so its not a beast to research.

You should look at grooming habit differences between majors. maybe that's more sociology.

I did an independent study in college for my Asian Studies major, and it was one of my favorite classes! I came up with a system for learning Chinese characters for Japanese...

My major (history) had an independent research class we had to take. I wrote about art during the Holocaust.

I’m taking a one-credit Directed Study “course” for anthropology in the Fall. Here’s a very vague description from course catalog : Advanced students may conduct independent research under the supervision and guidance of members of the faculty.

So basically I guess I get to choose a topic with my advisor/professor and research it. Obviously I’ll talk to the professor in the Fall, but just wanted to informally get some ideas right now! What did you do? Any interesting ideas?
