@sunny: @regberadaisy: Yeah, if you learn Chinese, all of mainland China/Taiwan/Hong Kong learn the same "written" Chinese. Only difference is whether the words are simplified or traditional.

Cantonese is really a spoken dialect though most words can be written down, it's still considered "slang".

I didn't move to the US till I was 13!

hmm, I didn't even know there was a slang way to write at all! I thought all written Chinese was "proper" they way Mandi is spoken and like the way Canto news reports are done (which I have no idea what they are saying, even though I speak Canto! :bummed: ) My husband (white) has such a hard time understanding how I can say that the new report is in Cantonese, but I have no idea what they are trying to say... until I'm like, ok, imagine they are speaking Shakespearian "proper" English.

@sunny: LoL me either. That was money wasted. But no, my mom didn't even make it to 2nd grade. And whatever education my dad had was self taught. I was born in a teeny tiny village in China. School was for the "rich"!

@regberadaisy: If you have gone through any formal education to read & write, I think you would have learned the "proper" way since the textbooks are all written that way. But I'm not an expert... I only did Saturday morning classes for a few years and I can't really read or write anymore!

@sunny: but what if the person can't speak mandarin? First off, I can't read Cantonese or mandarin so I'm speaking out my butt. LOL! But like my mom can speak Cantonese but not mandarin. Just wondering if @stiletto_mom: mom is the same. :)

@regberadaisy: My mom always told me that in written form, you always do the "proper" mandarin way. I think the only times you'd really use the slangy stuff is when you see it in comic books.

@regberadaisy: It's written Chinese... So it's not in the spoken/slang canto way haha. Written Chinese technically is the same as Mandarin I guess.

Being born Canadian, I can speak but struggle a great deal to write. And I'm not about to use Google translate to help me. Yet, I haven't announced my pregnancy to anyone.

I'd like to write a part of a card to my mother in Chinese. I'm hoping someone can post the translation with simplified characters here (or PM me) so I can "copy" it into the card.

LOL My sad, sad attempt at connecting. But I'm going to try.

I'd like to translate, "Maternal Granmother (Por-por), your gift will be arriving in December 2016!"

If someone could type that out for me, and tell me the literal pin-yin I'd be forever grateful. I would usually ask my aunts how to write this, but I'd like to tell my mother about our pregnancy before I tell my other family.
