I have my own private plan. I picked the longest waiting period (6 months, I think) and I pay about $40 a month for it. It will replace about 60% of my income until age 65 if I ever become permanently disabled, I think!

I have a policy through my employer that costs a few bucks but my husband has the full on plan since he's a small biz owner. His kicks in after 6 months of disability and goes until he's 55, but it might be 60 now - he's been talking to our guy to renew this year. When he first got it 5 years ago at 30, it was cheap, like $500 a year, but we have accepted the insurance company's offer to increase the monthly payment for slightly higher rates so I think at this point we pay around $1,000. We make our agent shop it around every year so it changes all the time. Our rates are pretty low but a lot of this is that my husband is a patent attorney so for him to be unable to work at all he'd like have to be in a coma or blind.

DH does because he is a doctor, and it's "own occupation" insurance, meaning that as long as he is disabled enough not to be able to do THIS job (even if he could do another job), he would qualify. I don't remember the exact premium, but it's not cheap! But in his case, a necessity given that he is at the beginning of a high-earnings potential career after a long time training.

As I am self-employed, I recently applied for LT disability (bad timing since I then quickly found out I was pregnant! Oh well).

Anyway, wondering if anyone could share advice! How long does your policy last, what is the annual premium, et cetera? If it helps, I am a non-smoker with no major health issues but high cholesterol. I am trying to compare policies and kind of confused...the fine print is annoying!!
