Not pregnant yet, but my mom had it bad and this is one of my huge fears. I've read that sometimes it is very hereditary and other times not, so I guess we won't know for sure until it happens (or doesn't happen, hopefully!).

Oh and I was sick week 5-25 or so then weeks 31-38 (water broke.) got zofran week 6, reglan week 10. Learned to "live with" the overwhelming nauseous feeling 24/7. We are 1 and done.

I had HG. Only thing you can do is get everything possible done before getting pregnant. I know a lot of my friends for pregnant while finishing grad school or even while wedding planning. Could not have happened for me. Also -- "baby moons??" Lololol. Do not even think about it,

@MsMini: I hear you about the fear of a second pregnancy. I'm in mine now, and there were times I considered being one and done, but I talked myself into doing it one more time. While the beginning, sickest part felt like eons, I'm already just about halfway done, and overall it's sped by. Having a toddler this time around, while much more exhausting, does pass the time more quickly, and is a pretty good visual reminder that it's worth it. I have been worse nausea and vomiting-wise this time, but the aversions were much worse and just different with my first than they are this time. Even seeing a commercial of any kind of food made me cry and sent me running with baby 1, but that hasn't happened with this one. Basically, I'm trying to say, I know the fear, but it might be different, and you know how to get through it and what to expect for next time, so keep that in mind :)

I had HG as well, it was horrible. I was on 4 different meds to manage (diclectin, rantitidine, maxeran and Zofran), and was sick all the way through to delivery. It never really let up for me unfortunately.

I lost 20 pounds in my first trimester (I am overweight so it wasn't a major issue as far as fetal health and well being, but it wasn't great either).

I had to announce my pregnancy early (5 weeks), because of a few incidences of running out of LDR rooms and OR's to vomit (I am an NICU nurse and am on an infant resuscitation team) so I had to let them know why I needed to be taken off of resus team.

My aversions were random and changed all the time. I couldn't even walk into the meat department because the sight of raw meat made me vomit, likewise the sound of chewing, especially things like grapes or berries popping in peoples mouths. I could never predict what would set me off. I could barely brush my teeth, and things like dental exams/cleanings were totally out of the question.

I just took it 1 day at a time, and my DH was really good about taking over grocery shopping and most of the cooking.

That being said, hyper emesis is one of the big reasons we are waiting for baby #2. We would have liked to TTC again now, but there is no way I can be a parent to S and go through that again at this point in time, so we are waiting until he is a bit older and independent. For pregnancy #2, I will make sure I have a very early appointment and get my meds lined up right away so I can get on top of it faster.

@TurtleDoves: ugh. How frustrating!

@Mrs. Jacks: I remember watching a lot of TLC (Say Yes to the Dress and What Not to Wear, mostly) and I hate both of those shows now! They remind me of being miserable.

Never formally diagnosed.
I vomited 5-6x a day at least.
I was dehydrated and had to go to ER at 9w for an IV
Lost 9lbs by 11w
Didn't get Zofran until 20w (helped vomiting but not nausea)
Didn't feel much better until maybe 25w and even the. Had so MANY smell and food aversions. There are some foods (cantaloupe, chicken breast, saltines) that I can't have without gagging.

@hlk: my doctor didn't care either. My FIL have me the Zofran prescription and then called my OB and told her. She was like, "oh I would've given it to her"...um, no. I was hospitalized and you still didn't give it to me..

I had it too, both pregnancies I spent a couple of days getting fluids etc in hospital. I still can't stand the smell of ginger as I lived on (and threw up) ginger biscuits. Ugh.
Zofran was the only thing that helped me - it really took the edge off.
I do laugh now when I remember running out of court to vomit in a bin, only to find the judge had come out a different door and was looking on in horror. He later sent me a card congratulating me on the baby :) he had 5 kids himself so I guess he knew what was going on!
Try not to worry too much, my anxiety about being sick definitely amped up the nausea... Easier said than done I know!!

Cold things really helped me - cold fruit, cold drinks...

@erinpye: I was so lucky that my OB was understanding. She knew I had a history of disordered eating, so she was really good about not berating me for my 10+ lb weight loss. I knew it was getting serious when she was like, "Please do whatever you can to get at least a little protein in." I tried to sip those Odwalla protein shakes. I chilled them until they were almost slush and could only stomach one sip at a time. Over the course of the day I might get a whole bottle in.

I'm so glad you are feeling better than before. Thinking about what you are going through brought me right back to those bizarre days!

@Mrs. Jacks: oh my gosh, I want to cry thinking about having to do that. I wear a mask sometimes for my own work and I can't stand it when I'm this sick- breathing warm air, smelling my own breath- yuck. And the weight commets are hard- especially the "you're so lucky you're not gaining any weight yet/ you're so licky you're so small." I'd much rather eat hapilly and gain. And that's funny you mention the TV shows- there are certain ones I have a hard time watching, too, because I associate them with watching them while unsuccessfully trying to take my mind off of feeling terrible.

@Mrs. Jacks: You are a rock star!

I'm not saying that I have/had HG but what I think is curious in my case is that I previously had Graves' Disease so have been monitoring my thyroid levels once a month. My T4 has been elevated and my TSH is very low which can indicate HG. I didn't vomit as much as I've heard that you do with HG but I had nausea that was constant and affected my ability to eat all the time to the point where I lost 6 lbs and I still experience nausea now at 19 weeks.

@erinpye: I had no choice. It was awful though. It was the peak of H1N1. Providers were not being given the vaccine yet. I had to wear an N95 mask. I would go see a patient, go throw up, clean up, go see another patient, then throw up and the cycle continued all shift.

No one knew I was pregnant and so everyone kept saying, "Oh are you on a diet, you look great!" All I could think was how if those people had any idea what they were saying, they'd feel really bad.

To this day, the music from the show "The L Word" can make me nauseous, because I was binge watching that show during pregnancy. The association between The L Word and puking my guts out is burned deep into my brain!

I had it pretty bad. I wound up dehydrated and requiring liters of fluid and didn't gain any weight until the end of my second trimester. I agree that eating and laying down did not help... but working in the ER didn't help either! Zofran was my best friend, though even he? she? wasn't enough.

I have it, and had it with my first pregnancy too. It's something that unless you've been through it, you can't understand it- morning sickness doesn't come close. The best thing you can do to prepare is hope for the best, but be ready to attack it head on, right away if you're unfortunate enough to be faced with the worst. The sooner you get it under control, the better it will be managed overall. Also, have an OB who listens to you and takes you seriously. I made the mistake of waiting until I was 11 weeks and so dehydrated I had to check into the hospital and have an IV, before going on zofran. I'm 18.5 weeks and it's much less severe now than it was earlier on (weeks 8-12 I couldn't get out of bed or work), but I still have to take the zofran, haven't managed to gain any weight after losing, and the unrelenting nausea is there often. Also, yes getting out of the house is good, if you can, but be prepared to accept that at their worst, some people with HG can barely move without puking for periods of time. Sometimes it's impossible to even take a shower or prepare my own food. If that happens to you, listen to your body and rest. Eat what you can, when you can, sleep as much as possible, and remember the large majority of HG cases ease around the 20 week mark, and completely resolve after giving birth. There is an absolutely wonderful HG support group on Facebook that has given me so much help and just a place to vent, if you end up needing it, post on my wall here and I'll tell you where to find it. Fingers crossed you won't have to deal with it and will have run-of-the-mill morning sickness! (Or just feel great!) I've attached a little pic about MS vs. HG- I think I got it from helpher.org, which is a great reference for HG.

I was never diagnosed because my doctor wasn't great at listening (he acted like I was complaining every appointment and would say, "that's pregnancy for you"). I for sure had it with both of my pregnancies. I'll switch doctors before my next pregnancy. I would request Zofran. I would also try to get out more often during the next pregnancy. Staying at home, laying down made it worse and super depressing. Also, I'd listen to my intuition and not go along with what I assume pregnancy is meant to be like.

With my last two pregnancies, I would throw up 3-5 times a day until 30 weeks, then it slowed down to once a day until 40 weeks. I was dizzy frequently (especially in the shower or standing to blow dry my hair). Eating would not help the nausea. Also, my sense of smell was crazy...every single smell made me sick. Nothing helped me either. The BRAT diet, ginger, saltines, papaya enzyme, all of it, tried it and nothing worked :-/

Yup, it was bad. I threw up at least 5 times a day, every day, for 3 months. I could barely get out of bed. I don't even know how I made it through a work day (I called in sick a lot). I had it with both pregnancies. After my experience with my first pregnancy, I was hoping to be better prepared for the 2nd but I still got it. The unisom/B6 combo worked really well the first month and then it started wearing off but I still took it every day. When it got really bad, I took a prescription anti-nausea pill (Zofran) but I only did that a handful of times. Keeping my tummy full (with whatever seems remotely appetizing) and sleep got me through it.

Before TTC, HG was one of my fears because the women in my family have had it bad. I forgot about it in all the infertility mess, and then in the few times I've gotten pregnant since I've noticed that the nausea and aversions hit hard and early. Like the one time the betas were halfway decent, I lost enough weight by my first u/s for the nurse to comment on it.

If you had HG, is there anything you would do beforehand to prepare for the next time? I just wasn't prepared at all to be so sick and useless and dread the idea of it getting worse.
