@yoursilverlining: You just reminded me I have a proposal I can bring with me, it was to the Mayor's office about naming a day after my former employer. But I can also talk about how I led my org's efforts with college publications, like Princeton Review or US News, you have to compile a lot of data about programs and write something persuasive that will convince kids to pick your school. For me that involved keeping a tight deadline and working with other offices on writing the best profile for our school--not quite the same but I will play it up.

@grizz: Thanks! When you put it that way it sounds easy, but I know it isn't!

@Maysprout: I don't have any academic writing, but I did do a data analysis & report for my former employer about social media efforts. I'm going to bring that with me, it might kill two birds with one stone since this position is also responsible for social media.

Thanks everyone!

I'm not sure if science grants are really the same beast but I'd try and sell yourself with any type of academic writing you've done. Any sort of non-emotive writing I guess, especially that requires some examination and interpretation of others work. Data analysis is big in grants - both interpreting other people's works significance on what you're proposing and accumulating data from your job to analyze and be used to sell the grant. So any data analysis skills you have would be a big selling point I think. So many grants require different formats so I don't think not having any specific grant writing experience is really that negative as long as you have some academic writing and data analysis experience.

I had to look it up because I am super curious as to what it involves (I work in the for-profit sector, so I am hopless, really).

I saw an interesting online course at University of ND!

I might go this route eventually, I am exploring lots of options these days.

Most of grant writing is what the PPs have said - attention to detail, accurate gathering of data, persuasive writing skills, and your ability to convince the funders that you will be able to provide measurable results. It sounds more intimidating than it actually is :)

@mrsjazz: What sort of proposals have you written in the past? That might be an area you can talk up - one of the basic functions of successful grant-writing is being able to respond to the grant within the given timeline and in the appropriate manner the grantor has specified. This is sadly something many people cannot do, disqualifying them/their organization immediately. So, maybe try to break-down the umbrella of "grant-writing" into pieces, and respond with lots of examples of transferrable skills for those specific pieces?

@JoJoGirl: I'm a writer! So, I'm actually not worried about the writing part of it. In my last job I wrote for the website, magazine, press releases, correspondence, brochures, proposals...you name it. But I've never written a grant before! I've got 75% of the job description covered :)

@Mrs. Jacks: I will send you a message! Thanks :)

I have LOTS of grant writing experience. I think nothing translates directly but it helps to be a great researcher and a great writer/editor. You need to be extremely detail oriented and able to express yourself logically and graphically as well. I can talk to you offline more if you like.

Hmmm.. I think grant writing is definitely one of those skills that's a little bit of a hard sell on being transferable, but I think you're already on the right track. Do you have any other writing experience?

Another work question from me. I have an interview coming up next week that I am currently preparing for. The position involves PR, marketing, fundraising & grant writing for a small non-profit. I've been in the PR/communications field for years now and am trying to branch out and learn more about development because I want to eventually executive direct or found my own non-profit and development experience is key.

If you have grant-writing experience, please give me some advice on how I can sell myself without having actual grant-writing experience! I am already planning on playing up my communications and relationship building skills as being transferable.
