Yet another one here diagnosed with hypothyroidism while TTC and while my levels were checked regularly during both pregnancies, I've never needed an adjustment. I had twins on top of it for my second pregnancy, and still no issue, was delivered by a regular OB, not a MFM.

I was diagnosed with Hashi's after my first as well. My thyroid levels were regulated going into my second pregnancy and levels were checked once a month throughout my entire pregnancy. I did require an adjustment of Synthroid about once a trimester and returned to my regular dose immediately following delivery and levels were checked a few more times to make sure that dose was working. I am currently pregnant with my third and, although my endo has since changed (she moved and I am now seeing the one that took over for her), the same guidelines are being followed.

Both my endo and OB explained that if your regulated prior to pregnancy and throughout pregnancy then you really are not at any higher risk than a person with a functioning thyroid. It's basically a non-issue. They want your levels to be around 1.0 during your reproductive years.

I do have my anatomy scan at MFM and they determine if further ultrasounds are necessary after or not. With DD they did another one around 30 weeks just to double check growth and make sure her thyroid was developing correctly. I have my anatomy scan at the end of the month so we will see if they order another one this time or not.

I got my blood checked regularly and kept up with my medicine so I did not feel that my hypothyroidism made my pregnancy any more complicated or challenging.

1. Was it difficult to keep your levels balanced once you were pregnant?

Not difficult but required a couple of changes, settled by the 3rd month and never needed to change again after that!

2. Was it difficult to keep your levels balanced once you delivered?
Yes, this was more difficult, took over a year. However, it was less stressful because it was just me and not my baby's health to worry about. It was hard feeling extra tired when I already wasn't sleeping as much as I'd like but I just kept working with my doctor. He said it is common for things to go kind of crazy after pregnancy.

@FancyGem: I had Hashimotos and still do before and throughout my whole pregnancy! I took the same level of medication throughout the pregnancy and my levels stayed the same! In fact after over 18 months of giving birth my levels were still the same since I was still breastfeeding.
My pregnancy was fine and no issues because of thyroid. I was 32 when I delivered and 34 now with still no issues, and continue to take the same level of medication!
I would just get your levels stable and medication right and you should be great!

@FancyGem: I am hypo and my advice is to get your levels checked asap when you find out you are pregnant. My doc checked mine every 4 weeks and had to continuously up my dosage.

I developed thyroid problems with my first pregnancy, we started medication and had to adjust the dose a few times as time went on. When she was born, my levels went back to normal, but I had them tested again before I TTC #2 and they were crazy again. We brought them under control with medication and I got pregnant, but miscarried at 8 weeks. The doctor said the miscarriage was nothing to do with my thyroid because the medication had it under control. I'm now almost 36 weeks pregnant again and taking an elevated dose of meds. It didn't affect me getting pregnant or staying pregnant at all. The way my doctor explained it is that yes, it does put you at risk until the medication evens it out and then the risk goes away,

I've had a hypothyroid for years. My doctor checked my levels every month and had to adjust my medication quite a few times. It didn't take too long after giving birth for my levels to even out and now I've been on the same dose again for some time. DS was not a small baby at all!

It's not considered high risk unless you are out of control. I needed monthly labs and has a few dose adjustments and I still do. But that's always been the case for me. The important thing is to get your dose adjusted right away when you become pregnant.

I was taking medication for hypo-thyroid prior to my last pregnancy and throughout the pregnancy. I had no problems maintaining. After I gave birth, I didn't take my meds for about 6 weeks and when they tested at my PP check up, my levels were fine, so I quit taking meds altogether. Just had my levels checked again since I am KU and they are still fine. Oh and LO was 8 lb, 12 oz so not small.

I also have Hashimoto's, but have never had trouble regulating my levels. I found out while trying to get pregnant, since we were having a tough time. Baby was born healthy, and my levels are still fine. I'd suggest trying a naturopath, since they sometimes have different training in hormones.

@LindsayLou: Thanks for sharing! That may explain why my son was measuring small at first. They thought I was 2 weeks behind, but he is big when he was born.
I'll talk to my doctor more when I go in for my next annual exam.

I have never had issues regulating meds at any time during any of my pregnancies - my levels were checked at the beginning of each trimester and again every three months for a bit post delivery.
I was never considered high risk by my midwifes ... I think that's a bit odd, well managed, it's not really a big deal IMO. And I didn't have small babies.

I am currently 29 weeks pregnant with my first and have been on meds for hypothyroidism for about 7 years now. I can't answer your second question yet, but I've found it pretty easy to keep my levels balanced while pregnant. It helps that I'm pretty in tune with the symptoms I have when my meds are off (tired, even more cold than usual, low appetite). For what it's worth, my midwife did not consider me to be high risk. Hypothyroidism is definitely linked to an increased risk for a small baby though.

Hi, I'm not pregnant, but we are thinking about having another baby in a few years. I found out that I have hashimotos thryroid disease after my son was 1. I am still struggling to get my levels balanced. My doctor said that I would be considered high risk, which makes me nervous.
I have a few questions for those of you who have dealt with/dealing with this:
1. Was it difficult to keep your levels balanced once you were pregnant?
2. Was it difficult to keep your levels balanced once you delivered?
Please feel free to share any advice.
Thanks
