UPDATE! The meeting yesterday about adding speech actually ended in ordering a DBA to assess the help he needs and see if there are any signs that indicate that autism.

We did speach therapy from 18 months til 2. It helped a lot. But after she turned 2 they dropped her and we are just now starting a new speech therapy at 3.5. She has mostly 2 word sentences, drops syllables if the word is more than 2 syllables and her pronouciation is at a 2 year old level. So we are excited to start again and see improvements. It was really hard to get her in the new program and we have waited forever. I try not to dwell on her delay But rather celebrate each new thing she learns.

@jhd: I love the "ramble" other parents experiences really help me. I don't have anyone to talk to about it that understands. How old is your LO now, if you don't mind me asking? His increase in vocabulary must be so exciting!!! I can't wait to hear my little baby speak more!

@muffinsmuffins: That's great!!! My son's sessions are the same as far as play goes. He actually has therapy once a week for an hour. I am in the same boat as you. Many people would say, "He'll talk in his own time" and although I knew he would eventually, I knew the delay was not beneficial to him and he needed the help. The difference between him and other children was a bit unsettling for me. He is doing a bit better. He has been with the SI for about a month and his occupational therapist for about three weeks. I feel like he is more calm when unable to express himself when before he would throw a fit. He now tries more often to repeat us even if it does not come out perfectly, he at least tries where before he would not. On Monday we have a meeting to get him into speech. I am really happy about that because that was the whole reason I began this process.

@magnoliamama42: Thank you for sharing with me. DS is my first child so I don't have any experience with this process so it's nice to hear from other parents how they feel about it. Seeing improvement is so exciting!! How do you like your therapist?

@bubblegum: My LO has actually been seeing a speech therapist since birth because of feeding issues and then once we had his feeding issues resolved we moved on to speech. He was born with Pierre Robin so qualified for early intervention right away. Like PPs mentioned speech is usually LO playing with a therapist and then we get ideas of how to best work with him on particular things. He has had a huge leap in vocabulary in the last few weeks. I think that mostly has to do with his increase in confidence to try new words. He has a long way to go. He is still learning new sounds. For example he just learned how to get a really clear o sound. And DH worked with him and he figured out W. Sorry for the ramble! I hope your LO does well with the new therapists!

@bubblegum: I would say it took 2-3 weeks (2 sessions, we go every 2-3 weeks) before I was convinced he noticeably inproved. Because he's so young, his sessions consist of playing with the therapist with various toys and more homework stuff for us that is suggested in between. Everyone told us it would happen on its own so I let it go, but I was really really worried. He wasn't improving on his own since the 18 month visit and maybe even regressing (again, guh for everything!) After taking a week long trip to a cottage this summer with friends whose daughter is only 2 months older than him who speaks like a 5 year old, The differences really spurred us on to pursue it and not wait the 6 months or more for pubic services. We will still do that, but at least I feel I'm doing something to help him now instead of fumbling. How is your LO doing?

We actually started speech therapy really early - at 15 months. My daughter was not making any gestures (like pointing), or showing that she understood common words (mama, daddy, bottle, etc.).

She has had four sessions, and we have definitely already seen improvement. Although, like @muffinsmuffins said, some of it may be normal development. We have learned how to change our behaviors at home to help her and that has made a difference, too.

The improvements haven't been "huge", but more gradual. Looking at the difference between today and several weeks ago, yes I would say they are pretty big.

@jhd: Thank you! That's awesome. Do you mind telling me how long he has been in speech and how his speech was prior?

My son says very little words currently and cannot form two-three word sentences...not yet anyway. ;) we are very confident that therapy is going to help him a lot. My niece did not speak until she was 3 and now at 5 she won't stop! She was in the same program as my son.

DS was put on the looooong waiting list for public speech therapy at his 18 month well visit as he wasn't even close to whatever number of words they want to see. He is almost 22 months and we started seeing a private speech therapist a few weeks ago. Already we've noticed improvement! He has been on the late side of milestones and was born at 35 weeks, so some improvement may be just on his own. We weren't sure how to help him best so that's why we started while we wait for the full evaluation. I'm really happy so far with it and glad we did it. Right now we are focusing on exclamation words and sounds, and incorporating more baby sign language. He was saying 'guh' for literally everything before we started. Now he consistently says quite a few everyday words, mimics us more, and is starting to make car and animal sounds and the constant guh is fading thankfully!

Bumping this for you! My LO is also 2 and he's been in speech for a while. We have had huge leaps in his speech recently which is so exciting. Maybe other mamas will be able to chime in.

Hi ladies!

My DS just recently started therapy for his development. He's two years old. He has an SI therapist, an occupational therapist and we are working on having a speech therapist join the mix.

I am just looking for some insight on how other people's children and doing in their therapy or how they felt their child has improved.
