DH job had one for us when I was 6 months pregnant with LO. It's like a shower for the dad because it's easier for men to just buy diapers and or wipes. I thought it was great though because we had diapers until LO was around 3 months. Her coworkers pooled in for a generous gift certifcate for us to use to Buy Buy Baby, and a few clothing items (some handmade) and then got her a few picture frame type items. Probably just clothes, or one large gift (like friends pool together for a double stroller)<br /> Mother's blessing: never heard of it<br /> Sip n see: often is like a shower, but basically is just a get together to meet the baby and see the parents all at once after the baby is born.<br /> Baby Showers: These vary greatly in location, formalness, etc, but basically it's a party (sometimes women, sometimes coed) to celebrate a baby's impending arrival. usually for first baby, or special situations (large gap between kids, or first child for ONE parent but other has a child, etc) Gifts are often opened at the event and sometimes games are played, with prizes.</p> <p>HAHA I went all dictionary on you, I assume most people know what a lot of these are. My mom did get taken out to dinner be a few of her friends and they got her some little things to keep at the house when I had my first child - sippy cups, bibs, wipes, things like that. I thought that was kind of cute but a full blown party and regular baby presents seems strange. What kind of baby stuff did they give your MIL? I found it odd as well but she didn't request it at least (that I know of!) and I guess they were just excited for her. But what made it even more strange was that she was already a grandma... And they also did not give her gear for LO's visits to her house. My MIL wanted one. After spending an hour arguing with me when I politely told her I would rather not have a sprinkle for my second son in under a year and a half, she said that she wished someone would throw her a grandma shower then. I pointed out that both of us already had plenty of baby gear and she was like, "That's not the point, someone should be getting the attention and gifts! It's usually attended by women the mother views as strong role models or mentors - typically her own mother, aunts, sisters, some friends, even her midwife/doula - and these women form a circle and share amongst each other. They share their experiences with pregnancy, birth, postpartum, breastfeeding, raising children anything, really anything about womanhood. It is meant to make the mother feel supported and empowered and emotionally and spiritually prepared for her transition into motherhood. A baptism is the ceremony in the church where parents and godparents promise to raise the child in that faith. It's done after the child is born.
