I listened to audiobooks to preserve my sanity during my evening commutes. (Takes me about a half hour to get to work in the mornings and three times that to get home.) </p> <p>So I subscribed to Audible. You pay a set fee every month and get "credits". I listened to Unbroken (about a WWII POW), Gone With the Wind (48 straight hours of narration, but very well done!), various humor books, self-helpish books, novels, etc. </p> <p>Even if you don't use Audible, I would highly advise perusing their site, because they have everything. You can make a list of "possibles" then go to the library to see if they have them. (And try to listen to a snippet beforehand, because some narrators will make your skin crawl. I raid the children's section at the library and we listen in the car. I'm probably a bit, err, over-zealous, but we have been through a lot of classic children's lit so far. Trumpet of the Swan, Winnie the Pooh, the Little House series, Treasure Island, Peter Pan, etc, etc. I played a few of them twice and then asked LO about them--he's listening. And, holy moly, the production quality is often just awesome! There are some recorded children's poetry collections that are also quite good. (Memo to Dustin Hoffman: Your Horton sounds like a buffoon. I don't like to have the tv on when LO is awake, but I want her to hear lots of verbal communication to enhance her language development, so we just started listening to the Harry Potter books on audio.
