In town we pay $900/month at a good center. But i know people who pay more like $750. I'm sure you can find more and less expensive options including in-home day cares. Our nanny was $10/hr. And I'm sure if you were in the suburbs it could be less as well. It has the amenities of a big city (we're at the zoo today and my nieces are at the ballet! There are parks and museums and great shopping) but the affordability and livabilty of a smaller city. It's spread out so it feels a bit less crowded than some other big cities. Born and raised here. I love it! My DH is from Chicago and has lived here for 6 years and still raves about the weather and how much better it is here. He always says, "You don't have to shovel heat!" The cost of living can't be beat. You are going to feel like a millionaire coming from DC :silly: Traffic does suck but it sucks in DC as well so it shouldn't be too much of an adjustment for you. I grew up in Northern VA, lived in NYC then moved here for my H's job. We both love it here! So much more affordable than DC and NYC, and the weather is great. Yes, it's hot in the summer, but DC gets pretty darn hot, too, and the winters here are so mild. I was nervous about moving and had never even been to Texas, but I'm really happy. Honestly, my family and friends thought we were crazy, and they'll still ask, "so how is TEXAS?" with this kind of skeptical tone, haha, but I tell them it's great. Houston is a lot more diverse than I had imagined, and there's a ton of stuff to do. Great food, some cool museums for kids. Traffic can be terrible, but then, like you said, the traffic in the DC area sucks, too. Houston is a great city to be an accountant - all of the big 4 are here not to mention smaller shops and corporate accounting gigs. We live in the burbs - which I like because we are closer to the country and have more land (less congested), but are still close enough to the city for a quick trip to the zoo, museums, and other culture. </p> <p>The traffic is pretty terrible, but can be made easier depending on where you live. Also, I think since it is a common problem, companies are more likely to have flexible arrangements. We do have a lot of traffic, but depending on where you live it's not necessarily worse than other large metropolitan areas. We currently live in the DC metro area (Virginia suburbs), and we are wanting to move to a cheaper area.</p> <p>DH has a pretty specialized career, but I am an accountant so I should be able to find a job in either location. If we moved to Houston I may be able to transfer to my company's location there.</p> <p>Anyone live in these areas? What do you like about where you live? It is a good place to raise a family? We are looking to start a family soon. </p>
