No testing for me, and I never will. No family history of anything. I went in for my dating ultrasound and my anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I had a few other ultrasounds at the end just for measurements because they thought she was going to be a really big baby.

*raises hand* We didn't have any genetic testing done at all. My husband and I don't have a family history of any of the diseases they check for. And rather than be worried over a random false positive - we'd rather just enjoy the pregnancy and healthy baby to come! My sister had a false positive regarding Down's Syndrome and the doctor asked her if she'd like to terminate her pregnancy. She didn't. And lo and behold - when my nephew was born: perfectly healthy! No diseases or genetic defects at all! I wouldn't stress about it unless you have a family history of it.

@IRunForFun: I'm so glad you are getting an appointment!
And you are totally right to shop for a new health care provider--someone who will lay out all of your options, respects your decisions and will actively help you get what you choose.

We didn't do any with either child. My OB asked and with the first child I didn't know, so I asked him what made most patients do it. He said family history and asked me if it would change the outcome. For us it wouldn't have, so we didn't do it with either child.

FWIW, you can do the penta/quad screening in the second trimester. It is bloodwork. Although I would push for it, at my OBs they can always find somewhere to fit in an ultrasound. I did the penta screening with my first because I went in for a NT scan but found out I was 3.5 weeks farther along. We did the penta screening that day instead. The materni21, etc weren't available yet.

FWIW, I did the NIPT testing (like materni21) with this baby and it is never covered by insurance (unless over 35) but my OBs office had a rep offering it to everyone for $99. Couldn't hurt to ask to see if they offer it.

We didn't do any...I considered myself low risk and decided that the tests wouldn't change my decision to go through with the pregnancy. If anything, it would have caused a lot of worry & anxiety.

DD is two months old today, happy & healthy.

I'm even more annoyed with my OB's office now for acting like they didn't want to even do the referral because they'd never get me in. I'm glad I asked that they send it anyway because the specialist called this morning and offered me like 4 different appointment times early next week. So I'm happy about that but wtf OB? Definitely shopping around now. Just ridiculous.

I'd be super pissed.
We did all the scans, all the bloodwork, anything noninvasive that was offered we did.
We didn't know about the third until ten weeks and were able to get in for a scan without any problems.
If you want testing I'd push for it.

That's irritating! I didn't do the ultrasound, just the blood test, and I was disappointed at the time how long it felt with no ultrasound until 20 weeks (after the first one or maybe two). Next time I think I would do it.

@KayKay: He said they could do whatever testing they do at 16 weeks, but no ultrasound!

@ocean81: @twodoghouse: I'm incredibly annoyed at the practice. I was already considered switching and this just pushes me further toward that. I love my regular OB who was also my gyn but he's just one of a bunch so...I asked if there was any way to just schedule an ultrasound if they can't get us in for the NT scan and he said they don't do that.

@peachykeen: The doctor said he'd put the referral in (need to go out of office to a high risk place for the actual scan) and plead my case to see if they can squeeze me in. If they end up not being able to then I think I'll call back and ask again about just scheduling an ultrasound to see baby.

I guess I'm really more upset at the provider than not having the testing. I'm disappointed.

We did not do any testing for DD, but I may do it with a future pregnancy. DD was perfectly fine, though we did have a small "scare" at our anatomy scan.

The only reason I would consider doing it next time is because they supposedly wouldn't have referred us for an additional ultrasound or expressed any concern had we had the genetic testing done earlier, so that might have saved us some worry.

Given that it is the office's fault you were not already scheduled, though, I would really push for them to accommodate you if the testing is important to you!

I agree with @twodoghouse: that it sounds like the doctor's office screwed up big time since you were wanting testing and they didn't really make that happen.

That said, I'm 36 weeks with my third and I've not had testing for any of the 3. I am low risk, so it was never really a consideration for us. My first two were born perfectly healthy and the anatomy scan showed a healthy baby with this one so I don't regret it.
