I actually gave this question a lot of thought while TTC and thought I would be okay with just having 1-2 (the NT scan and the A/S), but then... I got KU. And it all just sort of swirled out of my control. First my doctor ordered one to make sure the pregnancy was not ectopic, then I had another to see the heartbeat, then a third with the midwives so they could see the hb... At this point, I don't think I could have made it this far without knowing that everything was going well, but I have a tremendous amount of respect for the women who can be so at peace with their pregnancies that they don't need u/s. I wish I had a small piece of that!

Although I'm really distrustful of our current medical system in general, I'm definitely for doing the two standard ultrasounds.

IMO, it could discover something that could save you or your baby's life... it did so in my cousin's case, his intestines were outside of his body. With no ultrasound, they both could have died.

I'm not one of those people that will go out and pay for the 4d ultrasound though!

I never even thought about not doing ultrasounds, my doctor has a machine in his office and vaginal ultrasounds are part of the annual examinations.

I think I had one at every appointment, plus a few at the hospital when I was released out of my OB's care. We were team green, so we never looked for the sex, but for growth measurements and heartbeat.

I am really curious to read Mrs.Tricycle's post. I think it will be very eye opening.

I am amazed at the strength of you ladies who choose not to find out!

Not for me though, I was chomping at the bit for any peek at my baby. The benefits to me definitely outweigh any risks, knowing if there was anything we should keep an eye on.

@Mrs. Tricycle: Looking forward to reading your post!

I'm an information person... and I'm glad I did because they found a subchorionic hemorrhage and a small placenta that required close monitoring of Lala's growth so that they could deliver her early if she quit growing altogether. I was so glad for the technology!

My mom never did any and we were all fine but I am nothing like her. I am VERY worried about everything and I am too high strung. I wish I could have more faith but for me, I need to see to believe (which is odd because i'm a very religious/faithful person) but not with this pregnancy. Too many little scares...

@Meggo5: I'm with you...Have had a ton of u/s (kind of embarassed by how many due to my SCH and spotting)...I'm definitely the opposite!

I admire everyone who can trust and have faith that everything's going lovely in there!

We're having ultrasounds due to our history and twins, but I completely respect those who choose not too.

I'm curious if those forgoing ultrasound are also forgoing doppler and just using a fetalscope?

@MamaMoose: Yes, I haven't had one yet at 16w. At this point I don't think I'll get any. I'm not worried about the baby and I'm enjoying the mystery. :)

I haven't done any serious research on possible side effects of ultrasounds, though my general belief is that the less interventions/invasive procedures are done, the better. I'm also worried the tech will slip up and tell us the sex, haha!

We've decided to skip all but the 18 week anatomy scan. We were on the fence about that one, but we let the Dr talk us into it. I'm working on a post about sonograms and our decision to forego the majority of them. It's kind of a hard one to write, as it's so different from what the majority of people believe/do. I'll have lots of research reasoning for you in a week or two.

I'm just the opposite. My OB is quite ultrasound-happy and does one at each appointment. This was a concern for me in the beginning as most doctors do not do this, but I have become more comfortable with it now.

@Arden: I only had one for the anatomy scan. My midwife didn't do them so I just accepted it- but it was hard never seeing him, especially in the beginning,

I believe @minnie_girl hasn't had any yet and is still undecided if she will do the anatomy scan.

I had a prior miscarriage and have had multiple episodes of spotting so I couldn't make it without the piece of mind of ultrasounds.

I'm just curious if there are any women here who have chosen not to have any ultrasounds during their pregnancy.
I know some women (and a few midwives and birth centers) choose not to do them for low risk women.
I would love to hear your research and reasoning behind the decision if you've chosen not to have ultrasounds. I have heard good arguments for both sides of the decision, but I would like to hear it from Moms who are in the situation.
