5 months today, and he is still very "serious". I like to pretend that he is just very contemplative, and spends his days thinking about the world. He only very recently started smiling when we play with him. I got giggles when I gave him a "kisses attack!" this weeekend, which was amazingly exciting.

I joke that I *earn* my smiles, while other babies just give them away. But I secretly hope that he continues to get more smiley as he gets older.

As a toddler my child refuses to smile for the camera, she was always a happy/smiley baby but now she doesn't show it very often. If she does it's never when I want her too ;)

My DD was born a super serious baby and a master mean mugger! But she is all smiles and super silly now! It took a couple years - she's 4 now. I think the turning point for us was after 2 years old when she started feeling more comfortable in social environments.

My LO took forever to really be smiley, but he smiles and laughs constantly. Even after he started smiling a lot more he'd get real serious when we'd try to take a picture of him, I think he was concentrating on the phone/camera. He essentially looked like this for the first 4 or 5 months:

@erinpye: @rachiecakes: I have "mean mugging" babies too! LO1 started smiling around 8 weeks, but you reeeeally had to work for it. Same with laughing. He laughed at 4 months and it was such a beautiful sound, but it took awhile to hear it regularly. He wasn't a grumpy baby, just very intent on listening or trying to practice new skills. He's a very smiley toddler now.

LO2 is just 5 weeks old, but he's only given me one half-smile so far and has that same serious expression his brother had. I think it's genetic. You know that expression "resting bitch face?" I has it, even though I think I'm a pretty friendly person. Hey, it keeps weirdos away, right?

Mine! My mother used to always comment about how he was so grumpy and serious. (He has my husband's strong brow and death stare, lol!)

He was a very content baby and into everything, really focused learning new skills, it's like you could see the wheels turning as he was trying to figure out how to sit/stand/crawl/walk/speak/etc.
And he loved being scared - like if you'd pop out from behind a corner on him, he thought that was hysterical, lol.

Pshhhh my kids are *always* smiling, can't you tell‽ :silly: Truthfully though, my babies have always been called "serious" or people have said they're "mean-mugging." They're happy, and smile and giggle plenty, but have never been the happy babies people think of. I like to say they're just very focused on the world around them!

My daughter wasn't much of a smiler for a long time! It also took her longer to laugh much (she could laugh, just didn't very often). Now, at almost 9 months, she laughs and smikes a lot!

My guy smiles a few times a day, but rarely smiles AT us or our attempts (blowing raspberries on his tummy, funny faces, peekaboo, etc.). Usually he smiles at shiny things, lights, and especially our kitchen backsplash. :meh: He's 18 weeks/13 weeks adjusted. Not to say that he seems unhappy during his wake times, he just has a poker face!

Anyone else's LO not particularly smiley? I hope this changes soon because I love his smiles!
