@T.H.O.U.: Interesting!! I will have to keep @MrBee's suggestion about reading books outside the bedroom first! Growing up, we were never read a bedtime story, but it's something I'd like to do with DS.

@T.H.O.U.: whoa that's crazy! I would hope that we can maintain a positive relationship between reading and bedtime. I know that I like to do some light reading before sleeping myself.

We have a two book rule and stick to it! She'll try to ask for more to stall bedtime, but we say no. Two book rule.

@T.H.O.U.: I've heard some people recommend that you read the books outside of the bedroom first, and then head over to the bedroom and do the ritual (with dim lights)... for just that reason.

LO is 2, and for a long time my rule has been 2 books, and LO is totally fine with it. He probably has about 60 books on his shelf but tends to pull from the same 15, and he gets to pick 2 and that's it- he used to ask for more (still does occasionally) but is used to being told "nope, just two." I like it. We go to his room, change his diaper, put on his pjs, read two books, and then we turn off the lights and hug/rock in his glider for a few minutes, talking and singing, before I put him down in his crib awake. He usually talks to himself for a little while before he falls asleep, so he's never falling asleep during books or anything.

@artbee: I have actually heard that reading at bed time as a way to "wind down" can actually be bad for a child's relationship with reading. I guess the theory was that if you train a child that a book should put them to sleep, they will correlate reading with bedtime and may develop an aversion to reading.

We incorporated a bed time story early (like 6 weeks of age). He still gets read to throughout the day, but it is just a guaranteed time that he gets to "read" every day. My DH is not a reader at all, and I am, so I am working hard at instilling a love of reading into S.

no bedtime story here. DD is still too into eating books and speed turning the pages right now (1 yo). When she is old enough to sit through a short story being read to her and wants a bedtime story, I will be happy to read a few to her.

Right now we don't do a bedtime story. We have dinner, a bath every other day), teeth are brushed and E gets 15 minutes of run around time. We might read a book or play with his toys or we might rough house a little. Then we go into the bedroom, turn out the lights, turn on the nightlight, and nurse for 15-20mins. Usually that's more than enough and he's out about five minutes after he gets into his crib. E is 14 months.
When he stops nursing, I'll make that time story time but right now I think we're fine. He reads a lot during the day and honestly, I don't want a bedtime routine that takes hours. Simple was important to us.

We don't do a bedtime story, used to but we dropped it. We will probably pick the practice back up in the future. I read 2-3 books with her when we get home from child care.

We read and it's been a great thing for our oldest. He LOVES to "read." Sometimes I feel bad that I don't have as much time to read to him during the daytime b/c I have two now. It did used to take a LONG time to get him to bed b/c he would ask to read more and more and more. We had to nip it in the bud. Somehow we made it so that he picks the book he's going to read tomorrow and he enjoys doing that. Now we read one book and that's it. His bed time routine is much shorter now. So for us timing-wise it did get better. Just had to set something up so that he's willing to not read 4-5 books anymore. LOL!

We read a lot during the day but we don't do a bedtime story. We used to but then her routine changed a bit and now when we put her down, she wants a bit of play time on her own in her cot and then puts herself to sleep. She'll grab the book and try to eat the pages if we try the bedtime story, she just doesn't want it.

During the day though, it's a totally different story, we have story time several different times throughout the day, and when she's just playing, I have audiobooks on in the background (currently on book 2 of the Harry Potter series). I think when she gets a bit older, we'll incorporate a night time book back in to our routine.

My daughter is only 8 months but we don't and I don't plan to. I don't think reading has to be in a specific time during the day. My parents didn't read to me at night and I scored very high in English/language arts/reading classes and always scored high on verbal standardized tests. Reading specifically at bedtime is not necessary imo, and I was already planning to avoid it because I want bedtime to be about wind down not about getting excited (which a good story will do!)

We read most nights. There is a small collection of books (about six) in her room that she gets to pick from. She is told she gets two (sometimes she wasn't the same book twice). After the first one, I tell her one more book and then it's bed time. When I finish the second one and she asks for more, I tell her I already told her only two. It's now bedtime. She fusses a bit but nothing that we can't get through.

Some nights she sits in our bed and identifies objects in some of her bigger picture books and then we don't necessarily read a separate book for bedtime.

Books are hugely important to me as I regret not being an avid reader growing up. And other than limiting books at bedtime, I try hard not to deny her books. Tonight I think I read llama llama zippity zoom about 10 times in a row before we ever started bedtime.

We don't. I feel a little weird (guilty?) about it because we both love books so much but LO will not let us/anyone read to her. She has to hold the book and turn pages on her own and will "talk" over the reader until they stop. I've tried reading baby books to her at bedtime, and older books (tried the first Harry Potter) and she just gets excited and starts doing "the worm" on her back up and down the mattress and laughing and trying to grab the book and chatter over me. Not sleepy-time encouraging behavior!

We read three books every night... it's worked out to be a good number. Charlie wants more, but we're firm that the limit is 3... and we let him pick which books we read, which helps too!

My lo always wants more when it comes to books. One is not enough. We have our routine- bath (which includes bath books), pjs, milk, brush teeth, and bed.

It works for us, but I feel like I'm depriving her of the traditional bedtime story. But then again I know if we start reading she will take forever to go to bed.
