Yup, hemp milk. I was able to find it at my old grocery store, which was nothing special - it had a small, single aisle of organic/natural foods and I never had trouble finding it there. I haven't checked my local Target, but Wegman's has it. You can also order from Amazon (though my sister cautions against ordering stuff like that because packing may be insulted in shipment and compromise the product and OCCASIONALLY you're not getting what you think you're getting).

We didn't do WCM with DS for the same reasons. We nursed when we were together, and he drank water. As long as he got sufficient calcium and fat from his other foods I didn't see a need for a milk alternative. He got a lot of coconut oil and avocado. I dropped to one pump/day after 11 months and petered out eventually once I realized DS was good with solids and water.

My youngest is allergic to milk, peanut, corn and egg. I pumped until she was 15 months and then we transitioned to hemp milk. We've never had any issues, thankfully.

LO is only 13 months, but we are not introducing cow's milk (with the pediatrician's blessing). We took advantage of her bottle hiatus while I was on winter break to make the switch to taking breast milk from a cup. It took about a week for her to adjust and for us to find the right cup. During that week, she was only drinking water during the day, and compensated with maybe a bit more food. Now that she's drinking breast milk from a straw cup, I've been surprised with how little seems to be enough for her - about half of what she was taking from bottles just a month ago!

I am still pumping once, on the way to work in the morning. I produce less than she drinks during the day. The plan when I run out of freezer stash is just to switch to water and food during the day, nursing when we are together.

I weaned my first to Hemp milk around 13 months when I stopped pumping at work (well, stopped pumping entirely). Hemp milk is a stronger taste than something like almond milk, so it was a pretty slow process. She already had bottles/sippies during the day of breast milk, so over a month long period, I did 5 oz bm to 1 oz hemp milk until she got used to it. Then 4/2. Then 3/3. And so on until she was fully on hemp milk.

Then we switched her to almond milk around 2 years old because I was less worried about calories at that point. Hemp is most similar to cow's milk in terms of calories/oz. I know your LO is sensitive to nuts, so you could try flax milk or the new pea protein milk or rice milk---but essentially you are just giving a liquid that has added vitamins like vitamin D and that has calories. So you don't *need* any type of milk or milk substitute as long as your babe eats well and you give a good multivitamin. In the case of my first LO, she was NOT a good eater at all (in terms of volume), so I still wanted her to have some kind of milk substitute just as a calorie/vitamin filler.

With my 2nd, who also has a dairy intolerance, I haven't worried much at all about what dairy substitute to use or calories or how much she drinks now, because she eats very well and is a chubby little thing. We use almond milk for her and now that we are transitioning off bottles, she has very little (mostly just water) and I'm fine with that.

I kept pumping, my work didn't care. I pumped till about 14-15 ish months? Although I cut down to 1 pump a day. I always had a huge oversupply and still had a ton of BM in the freezer so I just used that.

I think hemp milk would be the best alternative, but my LO wouldn't drink it. He will drink rice milk but I don't like it that much (too low fat).

To give you some hope, my LO is almost 17 months now. He passed his blood allergy test for all top 8 allergens, so we did a "dairy challenge" with Similac sensitive (very low lactose) formula and now he is drinking that! Woohoo. We still have not tried WCM and we'll be trying lactose free to start with, and he's still had some reaction to dairy foods (butter), but we're making progress.

I still nurse him AM and PM too.

We weaned to hemp milk and I stopped pumping at around 12 months, although I continued nursing morning and night. We mixed BM and hemp for about a month after that using my freezer stash and eventually went to straight hemp milk. By 14 months, we had introduced dairy back into her diet and she seemed fine with it, and at the same time, she had stopped liking the hemp milk as much and started refusing it. We tried other milks at that point but she refused those too so we just started giving her more water and providing cheese and yogurt. The pediatrician said that was fine, and I also continued nursing twice per day until she was around 18 months and once per day until she was a little past 2.

@Pollywog: your LO sounds a lot like mine. I pumped until she was 16 months old when I went on summer vacation. I made vague attempts to get her to drink WCM and almond milk but I always felt she reacted and she mostly rejected it anyway. I did transition to straw cups around 13 months, daycare never said anything to me about it (and I would have been pretty mad if they had!). Same thing with pumping at work, I was only using up my prep time at school so no one would have ever said anything to me. They actually asked if I needed the pump room still when I went back this fall when she was 18 months so they were great about it!

When she went back to dc this fall at 18 months I just sent water. She can have dairy products now (basically started to tolerate those at same time) and continues to reject milk & mlk substitutes unless I mix with pumped milk (which I only have a small amount left of) and even then she won't drink much. We still nurse am/pm and before nap on the weekends.

So my long winded point is that if you are still nursing I wouldn't worry about switching over if you don't want to. Hopefully LO will grow out of his mspi and I think you'll find he'll take to dairy products more easily than regular milk if and when he can have them.

I SAH so my experience may no be relevant. My LO was MSPI and couldn't tolerate WCM at a year but I was done with the pump (I pumped at least once a day up to that point). I tried hemp milk but he wasn't a big fan so I just offered water and nursed first thing in the morning, at naps, bedtime, and overnight. He was able to have WCM between 15-18 months, I don't remember when exactly but I just started very small amounts and continued nursing as we had until around 2.

My guy is 14 month old and refuses cows milk. I tried all sorts of cups, warm and cold, mixed with bm and on its own and nothing has worked so far. I pump weaned 2 weeks ago and he nurses 2-3 times per day. I dropped one bottle a week at daycare. We just give water for hydration and make sure that he gets enough fat from his food. He is a really good eater though. He does eat yogurt every day too but that's not an option for you. We also give him a powder multi vitamin. Cows milk is not a dietary requirement, it's just an easy way to get fat and calcium.
I found this article on kellymom to be very reassuring: http://kellymom.com/nutrition/starting-solids/toddler-foods/

No specific advice except to say that my wee guy started daycare at 14 months old (so slightly older) and doesn't have any kind of milk while we're apart. We still nurse when we're together and he drinks water and solids at daycare.

My LO is 11.5 months and has severe MSPI. I can't wean to cow, goat, or soy milk. LO isn't the best with solids, but gets 16 oz of purees and some table food every day. He also has egg and gluten intollerances and is sensitive to nuts (okay for cooking or baking, but he can't have too much almond milk). We nurse 5 times a day on weekdays and he takes 12oz during his 7 hours at daycare.

I hate pumping, but I'm at a loss for about weaning. I intend to nurse for another year and I don't want to put him on special hypoallergenic formula.

My question is did anyone not wean to cows milk? How long did you pump? What did work say about pumping? How did daycare react? We are with a home daycare who understands his allergies and is pro breast feeding, so I'm sure she will be okay with it for another 6 months.
