@spaniellove: Wow! Thank you so much for this great info! She is definitely fearful of losing her crutch...I'm going to share this with her. I truly appreciate it! Good luck with your IVF:). I hope it is wildly successful and you're pregnant very soon!

I'm sorry your sister is going through this! I'm on Topamax for my seizures and am TTC (well, now about to do IVF). The meds issue has been a sticking point for us for at least 5 years now, and I've seen different doctors, tried going off a few times, and now I'm just staying on it.

Everyone's experience weaning off is probably going to be different. It has to be done very slowly (to avoid triggering a seizure) and her doctor will put together a plan for her. It's hard knowing you're losing your crutch. My body just doesn't like any adjustments to my dosage - if I switch from brand to generic I start having more seizures, and when I wean off I end up in the ER for my migraines. But since your sister's gone 3 years, she might do well.

If weaning off doesn't work or she decides she doesn't want to, I think Keppra is one of the safer antiseizure meds:
http://www2.massgeneral.org/aed/newsletter/Spring2012newsletter.pdf
What my neuro told me will/should happen is I'll start seeing a perinatologist when I'm pregnant and I should make sure I get an extra anatomy scan, so one at 18 weeks and one at 21 weeks. And since Topamax causes low birth weight (probably not relevant to Keppra), we'll keep an eye out for that and I'll supplement with protein shakes. It may sound like a lot, but it seemed like more of a risk to both me and a baby for me to be having seizures and migraines throughout a pregnancy. Good luck to your sister and I hope she continues to stay seizure-free!

My little sister is 26 and on Kepra for seizures due to a mild head injury when she was little (climbed to the top of a ladder to go down a waterslide at a pool, and slipped at the top and fell all the way down to the concrete when she was 4- yeesh!)....Her neurologist said that once she's been seizure-free for 3 years, she can start to wean off Kepra so they can TTC. She is a few months away from that point and is starting to get nervous about dropping the Kepra. If she has a seizure, she can't drive for 6 months, and that is really sucky. Not to mention a seizure could do horrible dangerous things to her brain that we don't even like to think about.

Has anyone else been on anti-seizure meds and TTC or had a LO? What was your experience with weaning off drugs?
