@Truth Bombs: I think it's probably surprising to a lot of people how late some sounds develop and are still in the range of normal!

I'm not a speech therapist, but I required speech therapy as a kid - mostly for the s, sh, ch, sounds. Besides my formal sessions with the speech therapist at school, I remember my mom working with me at bath time by hanging out while I was in the bathtub saying words to me and having me repeat them back to practice the sounds. I was probably about K age. That seems like something you could do very informally at home, while walking/riding in the car, etc., without making a big deal out of "you're saying these sounds wrong" - you can even have her give you challenges to say back to her so it doesn't feel one sided. :)

Make a speech box! I did a post on it, you can customize it to focus on the letter sounds she needs help with.

@Pancakes: Thanks for posting this. My 3 year old still pronounces 'v' as a 'b' sound unless I get her to really focus on saying it properly. I assumed that was normal but glad to know I was right.

I don't have any particular exercises for you, but based on this chart it sounds like she's still within developmental norms, which it sounds like you already know :)

We talked to a friend of the family who is a child speech pathologist because my daughter had some odd letter pronunciations. She said it as long as she could pronounce the letter/sound correctly when thinking and trying thats good enough. Often the words she said incorrectly were ones that she learned early on and her brain and muscles just remember them incorrectly. I think she said it wasn't until the end of K that they would start really treating if it was still an issue. But by then it should mostly be outgrown. Its crazy how just the difference from age 4 to age 4.5 (when we video taped her concerning speech) to now almost age 5 has been. Every six months she's still growing by leaps and bounds.

We have word lists. Like a page of words (think, thin, thing) and so on. Got them from our speech therapist, but I am sure you could find them online.

But the main thing was the actual speech exercises, of his jaw and tongue that made the difference. For my son it's was motor weakness.

I'm looking for some recommendations on how to work with our almost 4 year old on speech. There are some letters that she has a hard time with and I don't want to push her too hard but also would like to know the best way to help her learn how to say these sounds better. Examples: th comes out with the tongue out and L sounds like a Y.

We read to her daily (at least 4 books a day) and listen to audio books on the way to and from work. When she says something improperly, we repeat the word back to her properly and she usually tries to do it again.
