@T-Mom: (Sorry for the delay - we were away) Oh, I wish someone had bought me the book! So I say do that! Transitions here are very, very tricky. We do a lot of discussion around all transitions. Including the simplest of things. Happiest toddler had some good tricks too, we just needed the next level up. And, we need a whole arsenal since we are constantly having to mix it up on him.

@Mrs. Paintbrush: well I think my DS is not technically a "spirited" child as the book defines it. He throws tantrums daily but nothing out of the ordinary. He doesn't deal well with transitions and has a meltdown when things don't go his way.. I'm starting to use the happiest toddler technique and its working ok. My BFF's DS however seems very spirited. He wakes up screaming few times a week (22 mo old) and will cry for 1.5 or 2 hr and is super stubborn. He had a very hard time getting off the bedtime bottle at 21 mo. I think I'm just gonna buy the book for her!

@T-Mom: Hmmm... I would say that's accurate, although I'm pretty sure that's where I got some of my most successful discipline techniques from. And I do believe that there is some techniques we tried for our sleep issues. But don't quote me on that. I can double check when I am near the book.

That said, what kind of behavior do you need tools for? I may be able to direct you to some other sources. :)

@Mrs. Paintbrush: I haven't read the book yet, but from the reviews that I read, it seems like the book doesn't really give you tools for dealing, only reassurance that you're not alone.. Would you agree? I'm looking more for tools...

@BabyBoecksMom: "I feel a lot less stressed when she breaks down because I know what's going on in her head and I know how to help her relax." <-- THIS!!! Yes, just having the clarity as to what's happening behind the scenes is so huge. I've been pondering a post about how we've been successful in calming the escalation, since that is KEY here.

@anbanan15: I just downloaded the updated version and plan to re-read this summer. Completely not my idea of a summer read, but with Kindergarten on the horizon, I feel I must. Let me know if you want a partner in reading/motivator! It could be a book club of, uh, 2. ;-)

@Mrs. Paintbrush: It seems like it has really helped us. I think it's helped me moreso than anything. I feel a lot less stressed when she breaks down because I know what's going on in her head and I know how to help her relax. So, although the past 5 months have been brutal, I see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Super late to this. (So much for that new years resolution to get involved on the boards) This book saved my relationship with my son. Seriously. I have nothing but praise for it. (And for "Sleepless in America" which I read here and there.)
@BabyBoecksMom: Has it helped you?! I remember discussing this ages ago with you!
@T-Mom: The book does help you figure out the difference. And it was actually really therapeutic for me because while my LO rated HIGH on the chart, he wasn't off the charts, so I can appreciate the areas where he's "Just a boy"

@anbanan15: I guess the part I don't know is.. How do you know if your child is "spirited" versus just.. A boy? Maybe the book will tell me the difference :-) .
