@HazelEyes: Wall me if you have questions! Not that I'm an expert, but I feel like most new users probably run into similar issue! I'm def still confused some days, but I can see this being a really useful tool in the long run. I also search the YNAB reddit and have posted some questions and gotten really helpful responses there!

@snowjewelz: Thats good to hear that you have had good results from emailing them. I"m still a little confused by the whole thing as well. At this point I"m just trying to input my expenses and hoping that I'll get the bigger picture of where my money goes so I can plan better!

@Kbee: Yes! I actually got my trial extended for another month bc I was emailing with someone and said I still barely have it figured out! It has a pretty steep learning curve for me, since there are some major departures from "traditional" budgeting. But I must say that once I cleared up my confusion (emailing them is so helpful, and also looking in Reddit), I am really seeing how great of a tool it is. Wall me if you have specific questions! I will update again at the end of the month; I'm 90% sure I will subscribe and keep using it.

I tried the new YNAB (never did the old one) recently. But we're actually going to keep looking. DH and I have a really solid excel budget it's just getting too time consuming. Also, we just bought a house so we keep having unexpected bills and just new bills in general to keep track of. YNAB was awesome for setting up a budget and imputting online or through the phone app. Our issue was that it was not easy to track transactions and see data on a longer scale (not month to month). We want to be able to easily add up how much we've paid for oil so far for example. Or a break down of everything that we categorize as utilities.

Anyway, it's not bad but wasn't quite what we wanted. I've been checking out goodbudget recently and we might go with that instead.

@ValentineMommy: Yeah, so I kinda just deleted or lowered the categories that are already paid that didn't import into the program.

And I had to do some googling to figure out the whole credit card thing. So I thinnnnk I'm ok now?? I feel like this month is kind of a dud since we're half way through already!

@snowjewelz: That's the nice thing about ynab. Don't stress about those. give a good guestimate and then when the month ends, or as you see it dwindle, you can make an adjustment from a category that didn't see the same monthly usage. Just don't spread yourself too thin and you should be able to move money around a bit each month. It also gets way easier over time and more of your money, usually, becomes available to shift.

@snowjewelz: I just set mine up and had the same problem. What I read to do was to ignore the things you already paid for the month. So for me, I already paid my mortgage, so that's not a part of Feb.

@.twist.: @DillonLion: @lawbee11: it's such a pain for the initial set up! I guess b/c I'm doing this mid month and some of the budgeted items were already paid for, so I need to figure out how to make it "right" first!

The hardest for me is really to think about ALL the irregularly expenses and correctly budgeting for them by month...

@.twist.: LOL, same. After the initial setup I could get away with maybe 15 minutes/week. But I love budgeting so I spend more time than that on it.

@snowjewlez we've been using ynab for about a month. Thus far it's helped us plan monthly for our once a year expenses (ie, car registration) by putting away small bits each month. It's also helped us to make sure we are using all of our money toward our goals and not just having money lying around that gets wasted on unimportant things. For instance, my husband gets regular bonuses and we are now planning on how we use those instead of just having "extra" money that we waste on crap because it's there. It's also helped to eliminate some spending guilt because we had the money budgeted, so it's ok to use it. Not sure if all that makes sense!

@winniebee: Well, I think it's def a lot of work to set it up... I get the impression that you definitely need to either have like 10 minutes per day to upkeep it, or spend maybe close to an hour a week depending on if you got a lot of stuff going on?

I might start another thread soon asking for more experienced YNAB-ers. I guess I'm done setting up already but I gotta wait for my accounts' transactions to import...

@winniebee: It used to be a software you install, but now I think there's a web version + apps that sync up. It basically forces you to allocate the last $ so that every $ has a job and really gives you a detail look of where your money is going and helps you budget/save/pay down debt, anything.

I will let you know after I do this for a while.. I used to use Mint, but I realize it's more just telling me where my money is going but not really helping me budget. I have heard so many people raving about YNAB here.
