@MsMini: That's a good idea! Might have to try that.

@chopsuey: I need to keep a better eye on him. We figured out he says he's cold when he has to go (I guess feels like it when he's holding it in). So we put him on the potty a bunch and make him sit for awhile. Maybe I need to try and make him sit longer.

@FannyMae: ugh!!! sounds rough. :( Hang in there. She won't poop her pants forever. I'm sure she'll get it eventually. We have friends whose 4 year old didn't fully potty train until 4. Nothing they did worked and the day he turned 4, it all just finally clicked and no more accidents.

I have been stuck at this stage for what feels like a year. Stubbornly refuses to poop in the potty AT ALL. She wants to go and hide behind the couch and do it in her pants, could not care less if she feels smelly/yuck at all. No bribery works, she just shrugs it off completely. Pee is fine though, she will go by herself and can hold it (sometimes through the night). Its killing me :(

DS got the pee part immediately, but poops took 10 days.
We kept him bottomless and I watched him like a hawk. (He usually goes after eating a large meal).
When he acted like he had to poop, I'd have him sit on the potty and made him stay seated by bribing him with an orange tic tac. When he went, I cheered like craZy and anyone else that was home would cheer like crazy too. He loved the praise and soon stopped struggling with it.
He'll get it soon!!
Good luck!!

@mrskc: we told her she would get a Molly doll(Bubble Guppies) if she pooped on the potty. She finally did it and then the next day right back to in the pull up/panties. So the prize for it didn't work for us.

A friend of mine had great luck having her LO sit backwards on the regular potty (facing the tank) with a dry erase marker to colour on the inside of the lid! It would keep LO in place long enough to relax and let the poop come - she combined that was candy for poop in the potty.

@lovehoneybee: oh yeah we do have the toilet seat that is incorporated into the big toilet. he doesn't seem to like that one any better than his little chair. And my son does seem to be the same way with positive reinforcement. He is really responding well to the praise and high fives. When we did try rewards it seemed to upset him when he would try and go but wouldn't get one because he actually didn't pee or poop. I just need him to actually poop on the potty once!!! Then maybe it will click for him.

@littlejoy: we have a toilet seat that has a kid one built into it. He doesn't seem to like it anymore than the little chair. Oh and we do have that travel potty! haven't had a chance to use it yet.

@mrskc: Around 17 months, our LO stopped wanting to use her chair. We have had a lot more success with this seat: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G4C0HEW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s02 ...

And, really, we just bought this one for on the go (it's sooo tiny and convenient), and she's really loving it: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016KV73W?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Ugh to kids pooping during naps. Our LO did it yesterday, and it was not a turd poop -- it was one where you contemplate throwing the cloth diaper away. ;)

E responded better to positive reinforcement and praise than he did rewards (we made up a silly potty song "sitting on the potty, peeing in the potty, pooping in the potty like A BIG BOY!"), and generally making a big to-do whenever he used the potty (cheers, dancing, etc). He also had zero interest in a potty chair, he only wanted to be sitting on the big toilet (with a potty seat) like mom and dad.

We also put him in special Thomas big boy underwear right away and made a big deal about how important it was to keep Thomas clean and dry and how it made Thomas sad when he got dirty.

@Mrs Green Grass: eeek sounds like some improvement!!! So many of you say rewards and stickers are working so maybe we need to try it again.

Since he has pee down, maybe just something special (toy or candy) for pooping in the potty will work.

@autumnlove: I'm hoping this happens for him. if he doesn't get it soon, we will probably just let it go for a little while and do pull ups. He was saving poops for naps and nighttime but now it's been in underwear and the floor. I can't clean up anymore poop!! ugh. He totally had me convinced he was going to potty train super easy with the way he got pee so quickly.

@Mrs. Yoyo: that's good to know. Yeah I think if he just doesn't get it, we will back off for awhile. Then hopefully he'll want to start doing it on his own. I figure he's been standing up to poop almost his whole life, so sitting down to poop must feel really weird!

@Radish: I might have to give the sticker chart a go. I'm hoping he can get it soon!

@littlejoy: It's the summer infant potty seat. we try to spend a lot of time on the potty lately. he watches videos sometimes. I dunno. I think he's so used to standing up to poop and that sitting down feels weird so he holds it in.

We are just in day two of potty training my son (2.5). He had to be trained before preschool in two weeks!!

He's been 100% with pee which is awesome, but we've had 3 poops and 2 were in his undies and one on the carpet. We are doing stickers for per and an m&m, and he gets brownies if he goes poop on the potty. He definitely knew he needed to go this morning and we say there like 5 times in 30 minutes, then he went right after...hoping we are getting close.

@matador84: Good luck! hope the sticker chart works. I might have to try something like that.

What seat are you using?

We started training really early, and since she couldn't talk or walk to the toilet, I tried focusing on natural body timing for poop ... like, 20 minutes after eating ... first thing in the morning.

It sounds bad, but now at 18 months, I know she's totally capable, and when she tries to get off the potty, I just say no. (Best mom ever!) ...

We do a lot of reading on the toilet. She's also into tasks right now, so we have a book with snaps/zippers, etc, and that helps.

Dang, I hope he gets it soon. A potty chart with a big prize at the end worked for us. We implemented it about 5 days into the pooping in her panties phase (she was initially receptive to pooping on the potty) and hasn't had a poop accident since.

It's not exactly a "solution," but you may just need to give it time. We did the 3-day method with DS and after that he was a champ with pee, but it took him a couple of months before he would poop in the potty and not his underwear. A *lot* of kids (especially boys) have this issue and it seems like in many cases it resolves itself after awhile.

We did offer a bigger reward (toy) versus the M&Ms we had been using, and that seemed to help. Of course, then he wanted a toy overtime he pooped in the potty for a little while, but we were able to phase that out without much drama after it became routine.

Yes, LO 1 was pee trained right away but she refused to even attempt poops on the potty for several months and would just save #2s for nap and night diapers. I read some books and tried to talk about it but it seemed to make her even more resistant. I backed off and she wanted to try it a few months later!

Ugh, raises hand. I hate you potty training.

He'll be 3 in September and has to be PT for daycare. Tomorrow I'm going to do a chart and if he goes he'll get a sticker on the chart. 3 stickers will probably equal a prize from a jar. I feel like my DS doesn't care...so hopefully this will change things. I did the 3 day method earlier in the month and it didn't go that well.

We scaled back potty training cause she started not having any interest. But she has only pooped on the potty maybe 4 times in over a month. She will even tell me she is poopy but she won't sit on it long enough to go. She will go in her pull up or panties. We are going to give it a couple months before we really try again. For now we just ask her if she needs to go, half the time she will at least sit on the potty and the other half she won't, so we don't force it.

I am not there yet, but I just reS this book recommended by several bees. It is a really, really good book, a super fast read, and it has all kinds of idea for getting kids to poop on the toilet. There is a kids' book he wrote, too, and it has rave reviews. Weird, but I believe it!

We are having the same problem! LO is 2.5 and is doing great with peeing, but pooping is always in her undies. She went poop on the potty once during potty training boot camp weekend, but that was it and I think it was an accident. I have zero advice - just wanted to commiserate!

We are in the process of potty training DS (he'll be 3 in Oct). He's really good and using it for pee, but only wants to pee standing up. We are struggling with poop. I think he's scared to sit and poop. So far we've had a couple of poops where he just stood next to the potty and went (poop landed on floor, he just goes on his own to pee and won't even tell us so we didn't know he had to poop!) and now the last 2 days, he was maybe running to the potty and pooping as he ran. Both times we didn't see exactly what happened but there was a trail of poop.

We have him sit on the potty for 1 minute throughout the day. We tried rewards but he was not receptive to it. He does well with high fives and praise. We are at a loss of how to get him to be comfortable pooping on the potty. He just seems so uncomfortable. Maybe try a different seat? Maybe he's just not ready yet? Any suggestions?

I feel like if we can just get him to do it once, it will click. Right now he is just bottomless around the house and we do pull ups/diapers when we go out.
