I agree with PPs. I very rarely had any spotting or anything with Mirena, and I think that's pretty normal. My OB told me I could check to see if I could feel the strings occasionally, but it wasn't really necessary (she checked them when I went in for my yearly). (and like @yoursilverlining:, my string curled up around my cervix).

I trusted it WAY more than the pill (because I'm notoriously bad about remembering to take a pill (and I think it's more effective because less chance of user error?)

I agree with @yoursilverlining: and @MenagerieMama:

I definitely wouldn't switch back to BCP. I've had the copper iud for over a year and I specifically asked my OB/Gyn if I needed to check it. He said no. When I had my recent annual, he checked the position by ultrasound and it was exactly where it was supposed to be. You really just have to trust that it is there and working.

I would echo what Yoursilverlining said. I checked my strings once after it was placed and never again. This is my second IUD and I don't think I ever checked the first one! It's normal to not have a period and the IUD is just so much more reliable than pills that I would never switch based off a concern for pregnancy scares.

Well, not getting a period at all, or spotting, while on Mirena is totally normal, it's not really a pregnancy scare (except, a mental one).

I've had a Mirena for many years, and have never checked it's placement and never been advised to check it. The strings that people check for can often curl up around your cervix, making them nearly impossible to feel (this is the case with me, and part of why I don't check).

Hope this helps?

I personally wouldn't switch from an IUD to the pill if you are not having any issues with the Mirena, IUDs are much more reliable and much less work.

I have had the Mirena IUD for two years, and I can never tell if it's in place. My ob/gyn explained how I need to check every month, but I never can. So in the last 3 months I have had two pregnancy scares where I had to actually do a pregnancy test...thinking of switching back to the pill. I feel like it had more predictability for me. Anyone else do this? I don't get much of a period on Mirena so that is why the pregnancy scares have happened.
