@NeekieRose: The bed transition was actually super easy for us! Everyone said it would be a nightmare, but he's only gotten himself out of bed twice - once because it was morning and I took too long going in go get him, and once because he had a poopy diaper that was bothering him. Other than that he stays in bed - even if he's mad and cries a little bit before falling asleep, he does it in the bed. We got an extra long mesh rail that runs along the side so he can't roll off in his sleep, and for now we skipped the bed frame so it's not too high off the ground, that way he wouldn't be hurt if he did fall. And yeah, listen to your mom this time and let her help! I know I'm awful about that too, my mom have me the same lecture both times.

@wonderstruck: That's a really good warning. My mom came to stay with me last time (and will again this time) and she kept scolding me that I was overdoing it. But I didn't have any negative effects so I brushed it off. I will have to be more careful this time!

Sidenote, how did the transition to a toddler bed go? We are planning on switching DD to a bed before her baby sister gets here. She sleeps on a cot at daycare already, so I'm thinking it will be fine, but I know 16-17 months can be on the early side.

I don't have a second LO, but I've thought about this. If we have another I will likely leave E in daycare (assuming he's still there). He loves being there (he RUNS into this classroom and hugs his friends!), he's thriving there, and I wouldn't want to take that away from him. Plus I imagine I'd want some one on one time with my new baby.

@NeekieRose: Just be REALLY careful about not lifting the toddler then. I healed amazingly well and fast from my first c-section, but this time around Im having a very slow recovery because I overdid it physically and had a lot of irritation to my incision, it actually ended up having bleeding at one point! Recovery can be slower/harder with a RCS because of the scar tissue. I thought I was being careful - having picnics on the floor to avoid the high chair, switched to a toddler bed so I wasn't lifting him in/out of the crib, etc., and I still managed to damage the stitches!

@wonderstruck: Thanks for the advice! I am probably looking at a RCS and just hoping for as easy of a recovery as I had the first time (didn't need anything more than advil once I got home, and then only for a day or so). I have a Boba which was a lifesaver and will be used a lot with this baby too.

DD is a very easy kid, and pretty chill so I am hoping that she handles the transition well. I just don't see how we can justify the expense and I can set a routine at home.

I'd suggest keeping at least part-time to minimize the impact of the transition on your older child. My daughter is currently 16 months and I think it would be very difficult on her if we kept her home for a long period and then brought her back.

I would leave her in....

Everyone said the transition to two was easier than the transition to one and I found that to be very untrue for me. But everyone is different. Plus I think keeping the older ones routine is really helpful for easing the transition.

Right now I have a 1 month old and an 18 month old, so exact same age gap you're looking at...and I'm a SAHM! I'll be honest, it's a lot tougher than the first time around since I can't nap during the day at all because even if baby is sleeping, the toddler is awake! But it's definitely do-able. I'm starting to establish a bit of a routine, which makes it easier. And newborns sleep so much that you still have pretty decent chunks of time to devote to the toddler, although I'll admit he's been getting wayyyy too much TV time to hold off on tantrums when I'm nursing and he wants attention.

It's an extra challenge for me because I had a c-section and am still not allowed to lift the toddler for another week (and he just started walking when his new brother was 3 weeks old!), I highly recommend having help for the first week or two regardless of your delivery type, because all the lifting with a toddler (in/out of the car, the changing table, the high chair, etc) will really slow down your healing. We've had to modify our routine a lot to minimize how much I'm picking him up. Oh, and if you don't have a Moby or K'tan or something to wear the baby, get something! My K'tan is a lifesaver when baby wants to be held but big brother wants to play.

She went FT for bit before we switched to PT. It was summer time and we had to pay for 2 days a week to hold our spot for the fall so it made sense to send her.

Thanks guys! Makes me feel better. If we had to pay, I would probably send her some days. I was really happy to hear we can pull her out, especially since I am going to take 12 weeks leave but only have enough vacation and sick to cover about 7 weeks.

I'm struggling with this as well, we're no where near ready to TTC #2 but we chose a daycare near my office which is 45 min from our home and in the complete opposite direction from my hubs office. If i take a sick day, she doesnt go to school. So it stands to reason that if i take a maternity leave i wouldnt drive her all the way to daycare she would stay home with me and the new baby or i would have to switch her to a daycare closer to home

If we don't have to pay I'll do the same thing. My leave is unpaid so it'll nake quite a difference financially. If we have to pay he'll probably go at least a few days per week

I'm planning on having DD1 home with me. If my leave was only six weeks is consider having her stay in day care (nanny share) but a year would be too expensive and I'm looking forward to my time off with her

@NeekieRose: I took her down to 2 days because that's the minimum to maintain her spot. The 2 days were a nice break for me, I have to admit. :) But I don't think it's crazy! SAHMs don't get a "maternity leave"!

I am due in March and DD will be 17 months old. The plan is to take her out of daycare while I am on maternity leave. Our center will allow us to take her out without losing her spot and I don't think I can justify spending the money on daycare ($1,500/month) while at home. Plus I want to have that time with both of my babies.

Comments on another post have me thinking I'm crazy, but there have to be other moms that did this? Dealing with a toddler and newborn won't be easy all the time, but not impossible....right?
