@Iced Tea: that is so interesting. Where did you move from? In retrospect, do you think there is anything you could have researched to know that in advance, and if so, how?

Yes. And the thing that we didn't anticipate was the cost of health insurance in our new state. It is WAY more expensive, despite everything else being less expensive here. And we have far fewer options to choose from here also. We are now spending $960 a month for a pathetic plan that covers very little. Fortunately, you won't have that issue being in Canada!

@Banana330: not on the fence in terms of do it or not, 100% want to go. Just posted to see if anyone had done something similar and there was something that came up that they didn't think of or caught them off guard, you know?

@themrsgoff: thank you for sharing, that is amazing.

@Mrs. Gumdrop: that's a huge move, good for you! We are moving from family to other side of fam with the move, but Thailand would be huge.

also sort of, for me. We moved to Thailand! Our money goes so much farther here, i think it can be really similar in moving to a smaller town! i am so grateful that we both have time to be with our daughter in ways we wouldn't have had before.

Yes. 2 years ago I took a 77% pay cut, my husband took a 50% pay cut, and we moved 3 states away.

Worth every lost penny.

We see each other more, he never has to travel for work (previously he practically lived in another city), and we are more focused as a family.

Do we miss the extra income? Sure. Are we comfortable and getting by? Also yes.

I 100% believe that if we hadn't made that move we wouldn't have our son today. He is the result of IVF after trying unsuccessful fertility treatments with both REs in our previous city. So, all in all, worth it an infinite amount of times over.

@sunnyday: I'm from Nova Scotia and spent several years living in Ontario before I decided that I wanted to move back to NS. Like @nsmama I'm about an hour outside Halifax. It's definitely a lifestyle change if you are use to city living especially if you're moving to a super rural area but so worth it

@MommySLP: funny, we moved last year from the central
Valley to the beach! We were in SD before that though, so we knew we could never stay in the Central Valley, but we definitely gave up the idea of a big house, toys, etc. by reasoning that we are living vacation instead of going on a bunch of vacations.

I don't have any input on the pay cut, but I do live in rural Nova Scotia. We're a little over an hour away from Halifax and it's absolutely my favourite place in the world. Although, I do admit that sometimes it seems like we're behind the rest of the country in some ways. But as far as the cost of living goes, I can't complain.

@sunnyday: we didn't move across the country, but we moved from Central Valley in California (good pay for our careers & cheap living) to the beach (about 2.5 hrs). We each took about a 20k pay cut, so about $40k total. Also, housing prices are way higher. The only way we were able to do it is by making so much selling our house in the valley (had bought it as a foreclosure). Even though our salaries are way less, we will end up the same for retirement (both work in education) and the quality of life is soooo much better for us & the kids. We don't eat out nearly as much, have cut back on vacations & other non-necessities to make it work but without a doubt it was worth it.

@Corduroy: we wouldn't be able to get back in here if we move from it, like no way. It's just insanity. This house was supposed to be our lifer/never move again (no desire to move) until the market exploded and is now affording us this opportunity (that we always dreamed about). So it would be a one and done, new lifer house, haha!

I'm interested and curious to know where you are moving. Like Maine or NH, maybe? We moved across the country from Seattle to CT and both cost of living was comparable. We still live in the suburbs and a bit rural but cost of living is still high since it's outside of NYC. My pay was comparable (and competitive), as well.

Well, we did a move where my husband had to take a huge pay cut and it's going to take us a fair few years to catch up to what we had back in Toronto. But then we didn't own property.
Your move sounds much better and like it would be a great thing for all of you!

Do you see yourself wanting to move back to a higher cost of living area in the future? I often hear that it would be really hard to move back because you won't have the real estate appreciation. However we've had lots of friends move elsewhere and they're very happy.

@avivoca: I'm soooo excited. Probably more than DH and we're moving back to his "home".

@MrsBucky: We thankfully don't need a pro/con list. We know we want it, but there are still considerations to be made for sure.

@MrsSCB: we've made the decision to not go until I find a permanent job. We have great jobs we are leaving with excellent pay/pension/benefits, and DH won't get permanent right away, so our thought is swallow what we can in pay for me short term to have a permanent job to ensure some security and benefits for us and kids.

@Littlebit7: Jobwise, it's lateral for DH (teacher) so not much to be had in terms of advancements. For me it's a decent step backwards, but again my equivalent there still only makes about 70% of what I do now. It is also about a third of the role or responsibility I have now. I don't want to be exactly where I am right now and I would be making a change careerwise that I want, however I will likely be bored in a hurry, but there will be a chance (many, really) to move up once in. As for savings and retirement, again it doesn't really change things aside from employer and my auto contributions to pension, percentage will be less as I will be making less. My own contributions will stay the same. It definitely changes things a bit, but we have mapped out staying here and working and what that reality looks like, the commute will kill my husband before he gets to retire, so if we have to work a little longer for a better long term quality of life...then win.

We moved across the country almost four years ago. My husband had a job (reason we moved), I didn't when we moved. I took a significant paycut when I found a job in my field, a little over 50 percent. It honestly didn't feel that different because expenses/cost of living were so much less. And I'm now making more than I was in our old city, so I was able to make up for it. We still live in a city, though, so not quite the same.

We did, sort of. My husband took at 30ish percent pay cut and we moved 5 hours away last year. We moved from NYC to the DC suburbs, so cost of living is a bit lower but not a ton. It was worth it for us to have more predictability and job security for him as well as fewer overall hours. We made the decision by going out to brunch while our kid was at day care, making a pro/con list of everything and assigning each thing a weight. (A multiplier to indicate how important it was to us as a pro our con). That helped make it super clear even though I'm bad with change too! Good luck!

I'd love to hear from anyone who took a significant paycut, and moved a large distance for a lifestyle change?

We are looking at a 20 hour drive from our current home, less than 50% pay for me (can work my way back to about 75% of now with no further education). We would be able to be mortgage free with cost of housing here/what we've made on this house and cost of living there. Aside from mortgage free and paycuts our day to day won't look that much different.

I know what other bills will look like, everything will mostly go down, food will not (and daycare won't either :p). Some purchases will have to be very calculated or planned (closest city 2 hours from us).

If you did this, is there anything you didn't expect or didn't think of that you wish you knew? I am excited, but am so not one for change, so this is huge. This move will be from suburban/close to major city, hustle and bustle, to a small town of 4000 and a very different pace of life.
