I'm 24 weeks pregnant and plan to tandem nurse. My son is 15.5 months old and nurses 3 times a day. People always ask when I'll wean DS and think I'm crazy when I say I don't plan to before the baby is born. I worry about lack of support and feeling overwhelmed by it all but I really hope it works out.

I really want to tandem nurse. My husband wants me to ween. I agreed to ween 7 hours a day as a compromise. I think my husband is hoping that will lead to full on weening but I have no intention of fully stopping until my son is ready and we are TTC #2 this month. It makes me really sad sometimes to see how nursing is viewed in our culture. It's totally not for everyone and I get that but it should NEVER be frowned upon or looked at as wrong to nurse a child. We have Over sexualized breasts in our culture to a point where no one remembers what they are really there to do.

I'm currently tandem nursing my daughter (25 months) and 3 month old. My daughter was super attached to nursing when I got pregnant, but during the pregnancy she went down to 1 or 2 times per day; she really wasn't getting much, it was mostly for comfort. Much like @Navy_Mommy, I was also really committed to nursing to at least two, so the desire was there on both sides.

Once my son was born and my milk came in she became MUCH more interested. For the first few days, she wanted to nurse when he nursed. Now it's back to a few times a day, sometimes more, sometimes less. Sometimes for just comfort and other times for actual milk. She knows that her brother always gets to go first, and there's never been any sort of jealousy or ill-will toward him. (I'm not sure if that's simply her personality, or a result of tandem nursing, but I have to believe that it doesn't hurt). I also LOVE that I still have that quiet nursing time with her where it's just me and her. Splitting attention between two kids is hard, so it's wonderful to have that built into our daily lives. I know that she asks to nurse more when I'm a bit checked out, so it's a good reminder to be present with her.

I'm not going to lie. It's trying at times. I get touched-out, especially around growth-spurts. I worry a lot more about my supply than I ever did with my daughter (I had an over supply, now it's just normal), and I tire of the comments from my family and friends about how "crazy" I am. I also feel like there's very little support out there for moms that choose to tandem...mostly because the general reaction is so adverse.

I just keep saying that we'll tandem nurse for as long as it makes sense for everyone. I can't be touched out when my son needs to nurse, and I can't resent my daughter for nursing. So as long as I keep those feelings in check and take care of myself, we're good. But I still hold my commitment loosely. I'm interested to see how long I keep it up for though.

Also, for what it's worth, I NEVER thought that I would consider tandeming. It just kinda evolved, but it's been mostly positive so far. I'm also happy to answer any questions or offer any support!

I tandem nursed for around 8 months.
It went well and in the early months was great when I was engorged.

A few times I nursed both at the same time.. yikes!

I tandem nursed. My toddler weaned with I was four months along or so but got back in the game when the baby came. It's a great way to keep them both occupied, for sure!!!

I can tell you how it goes in a few weeks, lol.

I'm almost 37 weeks pregnant and I still nurse my 21 month old at least 3 times a day. There was a while I thought he would wean (I almost dried up) but I was pretty set on nursing him until he's at least 2 so I continued to offer regularly and now that I have more of SOMETHING (now colostrum, not milk) in there he's happy to nurse.

I'm excited to tandem nurse, my friends who have think it has been a great bonding experience for their little ones :-)

@jedeve: I missed your pregnancy announcement! Congratulations! And I'm interested in the responses you get, too. I don't want to wean my LO either, but would like to get pregnant in the near future.

@Dagny: Yeah, I've heard people say their LO weaned when they got pregnant, but mine doesn't seem to mind any taste changes yet! My nipples are sore, but it's not *too* bothersome.

I know people will think I'm *CRAZY* if I nurse two. But doing one 2x a day doesn't seem like a huge deal. I'm not that must-breastfeed-as-long-as-possible-type, but I just hate the idea of taking it away.

Following this one! I had an interesting conversation with my cousin who has 3 LOs. 1 and 2 are 21 months apart and 2 and 3 are 18 months apart. She nursed each until she approached the third trimester and said in both instances, LO naturally weaned around that time and she thinks its because the taste of your milk changes in preparation for the new baby. If that's true, what an amazing evolutionary adaptation right?!? Any who, I hope it's true. :-)

I'm debating tandem nursing. My LO is one year, and I'm 12 weeks pregnant. He nurses 5-6 times a day and loves it. I hate the thought of weaning him earlier than he wants. But on the other hand, I like the idea of my freedom.

Did you tandem nurse? What was your experience?
