FI speaks solely Spanish to LO, as do his family on skype/facetime.
we buy spanish books (they sell them for $1 at our grocery store) and check them out at the library.
we also occasionally go to bilingual story time

No Spanish here, but we are a bilingual household and DS is learning a 3rd language at his bilingual school. I would suggest speaking/reading to her as much as you can, listen to Spanish music and if you can do skype/FaceTime with Spanish speaking family, that would be great. I know some Barnes and Nobles in bigger cities have Spanish language children's books, so you could look there too.

Neither my husband nor I speak Spanish. But LO is learning some in daycare. She can currently count to 10 in Spanish. I know she would know more if we could better reinforce at home. She has some toys that are dual language and I will occassionally turn them to Spanish for her.

DH and I are both children of immigrants, so we speak Spanish fluently, and it is still so incredibly hard to speak Spanish to our boys because our first instinct is English. My advice would be to develop a plan and really stick to it.

With our oldest, I spoke to him exclusively in Spanish and DH in English for about 2 years, and after that, we both switched on and off. We asked our parents and childcare providers to speak to him in Spanish whenever possible, since he would hear English everywhere else. It worked great. He's 11 now, and fluent with a great Spanish accent, and can actively participate in conversations where we tranisition in and out of Spanish.

We haven't been so disciplined with our youngest {he's 13 months} but still speak to him in both languages, and have again enlisted the help of family and childcare providers.

As far as books, my local Target has a section devoted to Spanish/bilingual books that I purchase from regularly, and occasionally at TJ Maxx. Once they're older, and not trying to eat them, the public library is a great resource too.

We have some bilingual books that I'll either read in both languages, or sometimes just do the Spanish. We also have a Fisher Price remote that says a bunch of phrases and numbers in Spanish...they make other similar toys, too. That's one of her few electronic toys and I save it for when she gets bored in her car seat and I do a lot of singing along/repeating phrases to her. She just likes pressing buttons but I figure at least she's hearing the language. I'm bad about speaking Spanish to her regularly but I do simple phrases and alternate with English sometimes...every little bit helps I guess?

We don't speak Spanish but we plan on getting her into Spanish classes when she hits elementary school. Daycare offers it but we don't want to spend the extra money to put her in right now.

We set aside a half hour a day to only speak Spanish. I'm not that fluent, but it really helps the girls see that we're serious about it. You can buy books in Spanish. Just go to amazon and type in best sellers in children's Spanish books and you'll get a ton. One of our favorites is Esta casa está hecha de lodo.

We also have our toddler in dual immersion and our older daughter in Spanish immersion. So they spend a lot of time speaking Spanish :)

Oh we have Spanish reading hour at our library too.

@mrsmate: Thanks for the tip! I think I'm going to speak to one of our librarians because I haven't seen many Spanish books around. I know speaking to her in Spanish would be best, I just have to start doing it & remember to do so.

@Vegmama: Hadn't thought about flash cards, but I remember using some in our classroom at one point that had textures/different pictures & words in Spanish/English! I'll have to look them up.

Following! I'm not a native speaker, but am fluent. My husband is a native speaker and we plan to move to his native country at some point so I want to be sure any future children will learn. That said, we also speak Spanish at home so we'll have a leg up there.

My husband and I are both native Spanish speakers but don't do the best job of speaking to DS in Spanish. Luckily my mom watches him and only speaks to him in Spanish. I've gotten him a few toys that have Spanish settings. I've bought a few books from Amazon but wasn't too pleased with the selection. When I think about it, I repeat things to him in both English and Spanish.

DH speaks Spanish with DD. He's fluent but not a native speaker. I'm sure you already realize this, but the best thing you can do for your daughter's Spanish is to speak to her in Spanish. Far more important than playgroups or even books. I speak to my DD in Korean. It felt super awkward at first but it quickly became second nature. There are basically no resources for Korean speaking families in my area, but she can speak and understand it. We have 2 books in Korean.

As for books in Spanish, have you checked your local library? Our neighborhood branch is pretty crappy but even they have a pretty good Spanish kids' collection. If they don't see if they will order books for you.

If you're not against screen time, you can also check out ICDL (Intl Children's Digital Library). Some books are available to order by Amazon.

Good luck! It has been so rewarding to raise our DD multilingual.

Following this! My partner and I both know a bit of Spanish (it was his minor in college), so it's very important to us that our babies learn it, too. We'll do vocabulary in Spanish when they are very young, and transition into a Spanish immersion school once they're that age. They'll already be fluent in english by the time they're 4-5, and with immersion, I think you can reach fluency by 5-6.

I do love the idea to reading to baby in Spanish ... as well as flash cards or anything else that helps make those language connections in their brain.

I'm a native Spanish speaker & would like LO to learn Spanish so that she can communicate with my family. I'm terrible about speaking Spanish to her on a daily basis. I heard there's a Spanish baby group near us, so I'm going to check it out. I was thinking of reading more books in Spanish to her. Amazon has an ok selection, but not all that great. Anyone read Spanish to their LO's? If so, where do you find your books or have any suggestions?

Thanks!
