We did crib to twin with no issues. You could just put a rail on the queen and it would prob be fine.

We went from a crib in our room, to a queen-sized futon in her own room. It's very low down so she doesn't fall out and she loves it, she can roll about in her own space all night, plus if she needs me in the night I can comfortably sleep in there with her. It's worked great for us!

We went straight from crib to a queen for both of our kids for the same reasons as you (already had a queen available, didn't want to buy a toddler or twin bed). Mattresses are so expensive and difficult to get rid of, too. Plus, we love to host out of towners and having all these queen beds available for people to sleep on is really appealing to us.

For both we kept either crib size or twin size blankets for them to use. Both beds are pushed up against a corner of the room, and the side of the bed away from the wall is taken up by a body pillow for one of my kids and my giant Patrick the Pup stuffed dog for the other. Both are Ikea bed frames with no boxsprings so they're pretty low, so if/when they fall out it's not that far.

We went straight to a double, it went great. We got a guard rail and put the bed against a wall. No box spring so it's not that far off the ground. LO, who turns two this weekend has been sleeping perfectly in it. We do book and snuggles and then I says good night and leave the room.

@2PeasinaPod: ya it is not a big room, so the bed will for sure be up against a corner.

@buffalove: i might try that too. I was wondering if the overwhelming part would be the queen size comforter and should i just use A&A blankets like he has in his crib now

@.twist.: i am nervous about all the unfamiliarity, especially since i will be using his old nursery theme for his siblings, along with his crib etc. But before i actually put the nursery together, i hope he has adjusted to the new room. And in terms of familiar, i will have some of the same stuffed animals and blankets as before, so i hope that works. And our bedtime routine will be the same.

i went straight to a twin bed with no issues! i also made it seem more like a crib with a guard rail and i block the end with a big comforter. so far so good and she hasn't tried to climb out yet at 2.5 years old haha.

We transitioned straight to a couch at two and a half. We had to, because I was having trouble getting DS out of the crib in the mornings, and if DH got him out instead he was all upset. We gave DS his pillows and blanket, and it's his favorite couch that he slept on for months when he was teething. So it wasn't such a big change. I think he still misses the crib, but he likes being able to get out of bed, too.

@californiadreams: Is there a corner that you can stick the mattress in so that one side is blocked off? With it just being a mattress on the floor, I wouldn't worry too much if LO fell off...it's not very far!

We just did this, at LOs request. We also had a queen bed in LOs room that we use for guests, and about 2 weeks ago she started fighting bedtime in her crib and pointing to the big bed.

So we bought the temporary regalo side rails on Amazon prime and she's been sleeping there the past two weeks. No issues so far. She can get off the bed on her own, but she hasn't really done it yet. She normally just cries for us when she wakes up--same as before in the crib.

We're moving next month. I was going to do this too, but then I got worried that it would freak him out to be in an unfamiliar room, in an unfamiliar bed?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on that because I've convinced myself not to do it even though I really want to.

My friend has 3 kids and they all switched right to a queen before 2 (one was only 18 months)!

They do fine and didn't take much adjusting at all!

My other friend has a 2.5 year old who refuses to leave his crib. Lol! depends on your kid I think!!

@gingerbebe: lol that's how it is currently. I got one of those hammocks for his stuffed animals, but he kept yanking them down so they are just scattered about the bed now.

@aderyn: @2PeasinaPod: @Dandelion: i've thought about side rails to keep him from falling, but i also thought another option would be to just the put mattress on the floor by itself. Right now it is just a mattress on a box spring so still not very high off the ground and he can climb off and on no problem. I am only a little worried about him rolling in his sleep.

@Ginabean3: good idea about the door knob, that might be an issue since we will have more than one floor now!

thanks everyone, i feel better about trying it out now. fingers crossed he sleeps okay in there!

I did exactly the same thing at 23 months - went from crib to queen sized bed. He did great! No issues at all. We set the bed up in the corner and used a rail.

My mom advised me to make it look like his crib, and I did just that. I used only a fitted sheet in the beginning and placed the same items from his crib (binkies, a lightweight A&A blanket) in the bed.

We did crib straight to twin at 26 months. The twin is a low twin (on a slat platform frame so no box spring needed) and in the corner with a guardrail. In the beginning she liked to climb out but now she will stay put in there until I go get her! If she does wander off the bed, there isn't really anything she can mess up or hurt herself with anyways. We did put a knob cover on the inside of her door so she couldn't leave her room and wander around upstairs by herself. The transition has been great. She LOVES her big girl bed and actually asks for "sleeping time" so she can lie down in it. LOL. We transitioned her because we need the crib for #2 next month.

LO will be 3 in the fall, and we're looking to switch him from the toddler bed to a double bed in his big boy room because we need the crib (that converted into a toddler bed) for the new baby.

We're going to have rails on either side, and LO is big enough to get down off of the bed on his own without it being an issue. Were you going to put side rails up? I think that's the only thing that I would suggest, but our LO doesn't move a ton in his sleep either.

We skipped the toddler bed and went straight to a twin sized bed. Actually we had 2 twins pushed together on the floor because she needed us to lay with her at the time and we didn't want to jam into a twin with her. It was fine! Now she sleeps on a twin on the floor by herself.

WE did a twin bed that sits higher, we wish we would have done a full now. I don't see any problem going straight to a queen, we had several friends do this. There are railings to buy that you can put on (we did for while) to keep them from falling out.

Honestly, at that young age, I wouldn't recommend a queen bed. Most toddler beds are small, low to the ground, hard to fall out of. I can easily imagine a queen bed being an issue in some way or another.

We are moving in a few weeks and figured that would be a good time to get LO (who is 2 years, 7 months) out of the crib and into a bed. Basically, since he will go into a new room in a new house, we plan to add "new bed" and "no pacifier" to the mix! Also since we are expecting LO2 and the crib will go him/her.

However, I know usually people transition from crib to toddler sized bed, we are planning to give him a queen size bed. Reason is we already own 2 queen beds (we are planning to get a king for the master room). In our current apartment, the spare queen bed is already in LO's room across from his crib. We sit on the bed and read books every night and then i lie down with him in the dark and tell stories and cuddle before putting him the crib. It's all part of "the routine". So basically, i just want to ditch the crib in the new house and put him to sleep in the bed we already use for other purposes in his room.

Has anyone done this and how did it go? I prefer to keep a big bed so I can keep that part of our routine where I lie down with him for bit (and do so comfortably like I do now!).

I am worried that sleeping in a big bed will be overwhelming for him somehow? Maybe i am overthinking it?
