@abbydabbydoodlebug: gotcha. I used to live in Texas, but we still went to Mexico and DR and Canada fairly frequently, so I can't imagine not having passports--although it is funny that they are valid for 10 years and both of the girls are only 3 months old in their pictures, haha.

This is from the US state department website. Seems like a birth certificate is sufficient.

We went to Canada last year with my four year old and I think a birth certificate was fine but we got the passport. Look up Nexus card. If you are just driving across, it is way cheaper than a passport.

The last time we went, DD was 18 months, and we just needed her birth certificate. We drove across one of the bridges you will use. Not sure if it has changed or not, but I didn't think so!

@regberadaisy: OK thanks! I ordered a birth certificate for her already. It's that website cbp.gov? What website is that? I'll need to show my in laws proof from an official website, haha.

@Anagram: it would be a waste for us to get a passport for her. We never travel. This is an anniversary trip that my in laws are paying for. We haven't even left the state for 3 or 4 years! Lol. It kind of happens when you live in the middle of a giant state like TX.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: why not just get her a passport so you have one? Both our girls, 2.5 and 7 months, have one. We go to Canada a lot amd although we normally drive, sometimes we fly and we want the option to go out of the country other places, too.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: A lot of custom officers, both US and Canadian, have been telling us original onlys. So before our next trip across the border I'm going to get a certified copy and use that instead. Id rather not travel over constantly with my only copy!

We live near the border so we decided to get her a passport. We will be going up for the first time in a couple months, when she is three. Getting the passport for her was really painless and super easy to do. We filled everything out in person (both of us went, otherwise you need a letter from the non present parent).

@Grace: only for adults. It used to be just a drivers license but then post 9/11 adults needed valid passports. But still just birth certificate for kids.

I'm pretty sure you do need a passport. I know a few years ago the US required us Canadians to get passports to cross the border (by land) and I wouldn't be surprised if we reciprocated.

Unless something is changing in the near future we have always just used a original birth certificate to cross by land. Rules are different by air and sea. Was your mIL clear that you will be crossing by land?

We are going to Niagara Falls and Toronto this summer for a family trip. My in-laws just called and said that they talked to the county clerk and she said that my 2 year old will need a passport to cross the border. What!? All the things I've read online was that you just needed a birth certificate for kids to go to Canada.

Can anyone clear this up with me that has had first-hand experience?

ETA: We will be flying into Buffalo and then crossing in a rental car. We will not be flying into/out of Canada.
