@Snowdrop: I guess I like the idea of wool. We added it to our stash last minute, and now that I know more about it I'd like to give it another try. That said, I still have all my prefolds, and I can't really justify replacing them with fitteds. I really like the idea of doing it when baby is really tiny, mostly. So maybe I will just do it for the first three months? I've gotten more into waldorf parenting/education philosophies since having my daughter, and they have a lot to say about the sensitive nature of the newborn, and the important of protecting them from over stimulation. So, using synthetic fabrics on their skin can be jarring. Blablabla, hippy shit, but I do really like the softness, and in retrospect would like to keep the harsher feeling PUL off the skin during the early days.
All that said, since my daughter starting moving, the thirsties covers we've had have been amazing, no leaks ever.

My homemade soaker leaked through the legs (poop!). The kissa's, which was a pull on, worked really well, so I think it may have been a fit issue with the homemade soaker,.
Also, as I mentioned we only used wool at night. We added a hemp doubler when she started soaking through the wool. We never had leak/soaking through issues after that, but around 9-10 months we started having terrible smell issues. I stripped everything, and started washing the wool/lanolining more frequently, but it didn't really help. As she got bigger and started sleeping longer (and we didn't want to change her at night) she just started peeing more than the diapers could handle at night. We ended up switching to disposables over night. I guess I could have added another doubler, but it just seemed ridiculous at that point, her butt was huge and it looked like it might actually be arching her back strangely when she slept on her belly!

So....have you check out diaper swappers. Somehow I missed the existence of that website until now, someone else just turned me on to it. They have a whole forum section of wool dipes / longies, etc.

Sorry for the novel! I'm tired and rambling!

@Silva: i had the same problem with prefolds and wool. I actually sold my wool stash because i was having to wash after every wear. I have heard that using fitteds under wool works great, but i cant knit and the combo of wool and fitteds is just too expensive for us. I would if i could afford it though! Sbish fitteds and wool covers would be awesome :)

@Raindrop: thank you!

@Silva: thanks for the detailed answer! I'm hoping my fitteds should contain the runny stuff as they are elasticated at the back and round the legs (fingers crossed) my mum thinks they might be better up the back than the disposables she used to use on me and she is usually pretty honest).
I think I will have to get a couple of wrap style covers if you liked your lovey bum, my knitted ones do look comfy for a newborn but I'm worried about compression leaks. Was this the problem with yours or were they leaking round leg holes?
Can I ask as well, what did you like about wool which makes you want to do it more for LO#2?

We used wool at night for most of the first year so maybe I can help a little. We had a homemade cover, kissa's wool lover, and a lovey bums.
My first problem was that breastmilk poops are really runny. We had several leakage issues, mostly with my homemade one. The lovey bums would make a really nice day time cover, I think. The snaps are handy and give you a good fit, and it's pretty thin.

I'm planning to do more wool next time. if I'm having a winter baby I plan to get/make some longies for daytime wear. I still don't know what to do about the runny poop problem. Maybe it's because I was using prefolds with a snappy? Maybe fitteds would work better?

I really like the idea of using wool full time but I'm not sure what would be the best combination of covers. I have fitted nappies that I have sewn and a few wool Soakers that I have knitted. I was thinking about wool wraps too as they seem more secure.

What do you use? And are certain ones better for night/under clothes etc?
