This was pretty surprising because 1) the theater was packed so we had horrible seats very close to the screen, 2) it's Wagon Sr.'s favorite musical, and he's seen it 3 times and the old movie version, 3) I've seen it once with Lea Salonga who is my favorite singer, and 4) I really hate Anne Hathaway. I was prepared to just tolerate her since basically she's only in the beginning and end. But she really blew me away. I think this movie actually changed my opinion of her and I actually like her now. That is REALLY hard for me to do, especially with female actors!</p> <p>I loved that the singing wasn't pre-recorded. There were so many very intimate shots of the actors singing very very close up... you could see every pore in their skin and hear every little faltering of their voice, and it really added and magnified the emotion of the movie. I was totally riveted the entire time.</p> <p>It really blew me away. Sorry to hype it up but I was really really impressed. I was uncontrollably crying during some parts. Wagon Sr. is REALLY picky with these things but he said it was really well done and he also loved it. That’s my favorite musical; and I’ve seen it several times live and can’t wait to see how the movie compares. One thing that I thought was really interesting about the singing and it not being perfect – all the actors sang live, every single take. Priorities :) I loved it, even though some of the singing wasn't great. I expected better singing from Hugh Jackson and Anne Hathaway... I think they both sacrificed singing for acting, but their acting was great! Like @Mrs. Bee, I found it easier to understand the story watching the movie, even though I've seen it multiple times on stage in the past.</p> <p>I may not be a good judge though, because I love just about any movie. The key is to NEVER read reviews beforehand, and to go in with no expectations whatsoever :)</p> <p>Also, was anyone else totally distracted by how tiny Eponine's waist was???? After seeing it today, i can say that most of the les mis singers were really good and others were just ok.
