54?!!?! I have 14.

Cloth can be WAY less expensive than disposables if its done carefully, or way more. Depends on how you do it.

DH and I had this discussion last night. I've definitely spent more on cloth than we would have on disposables, but I'm hoping #2 will make it better. Though, I don't think DH will be happy if we have to start replacing elastic and worn out diapers. He does it because I like it, but he would not be upset to switch to disposables.

So maybe you spent more, but you still have those diapers which you can either sell for money or use on the next baby.

How much did you spend if you factor out the newborn stuff?
I spent over 200 on newborn stuff and used it for 8 weeks. Waste of money, but I am hoping to both reuse for another baby if we have one, and sell. They're still in amazing condition.

I spent 400ish on diapers that we've used from 8 weeks to now (17 months)--definitely got our money back on those! I think that with time, you'll see it even out. Also it's nice to not have to spend the money every month--so even if you don't break even, you don't *have* to buy that cute new print in a month when you are crunched for money.

@Beebug: That as my hang-up too. It does take a LOT of detergent and water to clean them...and electricity! But then again, I think it is better than what's needed (factories, paper, processing, selling them wrapped in plastic and in a huge box) to make the disposables and the landfill that hold them forever.

@birdofafeather: Agree! We have never had a poop-splosion ever, I love that about our dipes.

I didn't think of selling the newborn stash, that is a good call! Maybe after early days with #2 because I really didn't like the BGs right away for fit!

we only spent about $300-400 on CD supplies that were particular to CD exactly (some were gifted and i'm not counting things like wipes, bags, etc because i would have needed those anyway or the equivalent) so i calculated that we broke even somewhere around the 6 month mark.

54 diapers is a TON! we have 19 BG 4.0s, 8 flip covers and 24 inserts, and 3 BG elementals and it feels like a lot now at 9 months when she's only getting changed 5-6 times a day, but in the newborn stage, she was getting changed 12+ times a day. she HATED being wet.

you could easily sell your newborn stash and the fuzzibuns and just operate with the BGs once LO #2 is out of the newborn stage OR sell them now and just use disposables for the newborn stage.

we did a newborn rental and next time i'm just gonna do disposables because she was only in the newborns for 3 weeks and i wasn't impressed.

ETA: a huge "savings" for me has been in the fact that she does not have blow outs in her CDs. she's leaked, but never poop all over the place. since my friends in disposables are always talking about the poop on their clothes or their LOs' clothes, i'll take that any day!

@Beebug: Wow 54 diapers!

I thought I had a lot because I had about 30. Some were brands we just wanted to try out and others we used in our 2-3 day cycle.

I think the value will really add up with LO #2.

@Beebug: If it makes you feel better, I've read that it is much much greener to use the electricity and the water involved in CD-ing than it is to put a diaper in a landfill.

I've spent way more than I should on cloth diapers, and I still need to get more eventually (a lot of ours are newborn sized or for <15lbs). I've bought some used, too. But I wanted to go with a greener solution, and I also wanted a really easy to use and effective solution, not just the cheapest. If I wanted cheapest, I would have gone with pre-folds. But they can leak EBF poo, and they're more difficult to secure on the baby. So we went with mostly fitteds instead.

@scg00387: Thank-you :)

@TurtleDoves: lol is it really green though? Keeping more sposies physically out of the landfills, but the water to wash the CDs? I guess it can be re-used and the space in landfills can't?

@brownie: Agree, good call!

I just bought 25 BG's so my stash doubled in the last two weeks. They were super cheap ($120 for 25! I've paid that for 6 new!) and now I know why, they were masking build-up issues that are now my problem. After I boil the heck out of this weekend those will be a huge re-sale score down the road I can likely help balance myself out on a bit. Having the big stash has been awesome for daycare, I can send her dipes for the week on Monday and take them home as needed through the week for wash.

I did CDs mostly for environmental reasons, so the monetary savings weren't my chief motivation. I think I did pretty well as far as keeping disposables out of landfills. :) We only had 20 pocket diapers and a bunch of cloth wipes, though, so although the upfront cost was a little startling, it wasn't too bad. I'm fairly sure it was not cheaper overall, but I count laundry time as an expense of CDing, too!

I spent less than $400 on our stash so the math is a little different but I do think the real savings come in when you can reuse for #2. That is our plan, and I am hoping to have LO #1 out of dipes by the time LO 2 shows up...

There is the possible return on investment when you sell them again too. So that may help with the calculations. Also, you have disposables for 2-4 years. So it should save you some money.

We did gDiapers with the disposable insert, and will use them on baby 2. While they are not the cheapest option, the environmental aspect was what got me on board. I always felt SO bad throwing out disposable diapers on the occasions that we used them. If we had to do it all over again, I would do gDiapers again or full cloth.

First off, way to go momma for sticking with it! I went the disposal way, and we got lucky int eh fact that we were gifted so many we didn't buy diapers for they first 6 months, so I can't really complain about the expense since we got very lucky. (however, some of those were ones I bought when stockpiling when I was pregnant, but most were gifts.) I think we can conclude no matter what route you go, it's costly when you actually caculate how much is spent in a years time!

Yeah, I often have 'what did I do' moments where I wish I never knew about CDing. BUT, the true value will really come out with LO #2. I only spent $500 total, but it's still not *that* much less than disposables. If I had to do it all over again I don't know that I would, but since I already have everything I will do it with #2

So when I made the decision pre-LO to CD, I thought "oh yah, it will be so much less expensive".

LO is coming on her first Birthday (eeep!) and I remember the "calculations" I did before she arrived. I have zero regrets and realize CD'ing can be done for a lot less, but my "it's cheaper" excuse to CD is really not true in my case!

I figured one year of sposies would cost me just under $600. I did a very rough math calculation (over a year ago):
4 months of 10 diapers/day =$246 (22 cents a diaper)
4 months of 7/day $203 (26 cents a diaper, size up!)
4 months of 5/day $146 (26 cents a diaper, size up!)

One year of sposies cost $594.60. I don't necessarily think it's too far off.

I added up what I have
Full stash of newborn and small pre-folds and covers (I didn't end up using these, we used sposies to 3w)
12 Small Fuzzibuns
8 medium Fuzzibuns
54 (yes, 54.....) BG 4.0 Pockets

Some I purchased new, some I purchased used (see my next most recent CD post, lol) and my grand total is $870.

This includes bin, wet bags, detergent (used so far), cloth wipes, everything I could have dreamt to have needed to CD.

I left out the cost of regular wipes with sposies, but I didn't switch to cloth wipes until later, so it zero's itself out on either side (or close enough).

This doesn't include the cost of washing them, water, hydro, and my time. There is a lot of value on this, but again, something *I* wanted to do.

I have a solid stash now, and when we have another (I am 9w with our second), we still have a solid amount and I shouldn't have to buy any more, however elastic will need to be replaced, and that will be a cost if I have someone do it, or my time if I DIY.

I will keep CD'ing, but having a moment of "what am I doing?"

I suppose over more time this will flip, especially with two in dipes, but just wanted to check in and see if anyone ever feels as insane as I do.
