@Truth Bombs: oh no, my husband and I were wondering how accurate that test is. I'm resting at home, DH is taking care of our son. I don't feel any worse...I don't think?? I have asthma, so that's what I am concerned about getting bad. Thanks for your response.

@Bibliolove: Just FYI the flu test is about as good as the flu shot (accurate about 50% of the time), so if you continue to be extremely ill with high fever, chills, aches, etc. you could very well have the flu. Both my son and I were diagnosed with flu last year despite negative tests. So keep an eye on yourself and try not to be around too many other people. The good news is, that if you're nursing, your baby is getting the antibodies your body is building to fight off any and everything you've been exposed to including your husband's flu.

@ChiCalGoBee: I'm totally with you on people casually throwing out "oh I had the flu on X day" like it lasts 12 or so hours and then they are ok. Nope not how the flu works!! It's misssseerreable, long lasting and you feel like shit for days on end even after it has passed. Def not a 24 hour bug.

Yup, I got hit hard (and yes, I had gotten a flu shot). I’ve only had it once before so didn’t realize what it was until it was too late to get Tamiflu. I was hit Sunday 12/3 in the morning, and wasn’t fever-free until Friday (it came back a few times after that). It was the last week of federal reporting for my grant so I took off half a day, and worked from under two blankets on my couch with a 103 fever another day. Being a parent is tough! Thank god for daycare and grandparents. If you can send the kids to regular daycare and stay home, do it. I would have taken off at least a full 2 days if it wasn’t a bad time at work. I felt like I had a stomach bug, pneumonia, and got hit by a truck all while sitting outside in 45 degree weather—it was miserable.

I’m a runner and I took a full 4 days off. The first few times I ran after that I had to either walk home or use an inhaler several times. I’m still having respiratory issues but I’d say my cough is mild now. I feel like I had a pretty bad case so hopefully yours is better and you have more of an opportunity to rest and recover! Also, no idea where I got it from and so far no one else I know has gotten it.

If you’re breastfeeding I’d say try pumping and give him the milk you pumped so he gets all the good flu-fighting stuff from it! Keep hydrated, don’t force yourself to eat if it will just make you sick (applesauce was all I could keep down, but like broth it’s also good because it’s hydrating too), and Lysol the s*it out of everything. Constantly wash hands and try to have someone else deal with the baby when possible although flu is airborne so if you’re in the same house it’s tough.

@ChiCalGoBee: whew, I tested negative. That sounded awful for you! DH had a similar experience, I took myself and my LO to my in-laws to protect him. I must have a bug from a work party over the weekend.

Yes, what @bees_knees: said. I tested positive for H1N1 (Swine flu) and pneumonia when my son was 16 months old. We put him (and my husband) on Tamiflu right away and neither of them got sick. It was *awful.* People say "I have the flu" meaning they have a bad cold, but having the actual flu is the pits. Luckily since I went in early I was able to take Tamiflu and it absolutely shortened the life of the disease, but I had some really rough nights. Tons of night sweats, high fevers, horrible coughing and delirious. I really hope you don't have it. Hang in there.

@bees_knees: I asked the pediatrician last week about Tamiflu for him as a preventative (when DH tested +). They said no, unless he is showing symptoms. :/

@cake2017: thank you! I'm going to isolate myself when I go home.

I’d absolutely ask for Tamiflu for your LO. Some people think it’s too expensive/controversial/whatever, but if it has the slightest chance of preventing a sick 14 week old...

Feel better!

I’m so sorry. I had it years ago (like 7 yrs ago). It was awful. Fluids and rest. I would eat light too. Not too sure if you’re nursing? I know doctors say to continue to nurse when sick but I guess you can speak with doctors about that.

Also basics, keep washing hands and I would definitely wipe and clean house/sheets etc so it doesn’t spread!

Rest!

I hope you feel better!!!!!

I'm at urgent care getting tested. My DH had the flu last week (tested positive). I have a 14 week old at home and am incredibly worried about him getting it.

Anyone else get hit with influenza? Any tips or advice? I have never had the flu as an adult.
