My dad did when I was growing up ... but he'd usually work as many of the other days as he could to earn overtime pay.

I don't think I could do it, in either the field I was in (marketing) or the field I'm dipping my toes into now (software development). There are only so many brain hours in the day.

I did it pre baby and loved it. I worked two 7:30-5:30 days and two 9:00-7:00 days. I was working in a residential facility, so it allowed me more time with clients who might be at school or appointments during the day.
I did sometimes get calls on my day off if there was a crisis, but that doesn't bother me much and kind of goes with the territory of mental health work. I did send an email with a short update about each client (I was lead clinician for each of my 12 or so clients- so in charge of their treatment), so that people knew what was going on headed into the 3-day weekend. If there were big issues I'd meet in person with the staff that would be working over the 3-days.

It would be hard with my daughter now, and I'm not sure I"d do it because I"d basically never see her on the days that I worked (not to mention it would be impossible because my husband schedule is too unpredictable and we can't have her at our daycare for that long). The days were realllllly long but 3 days off was worth it. I had a fair amount of autonomy, so if my paper work was done and clients didn't need me I could sometimes leave early (also I was pregnant and knew I wasn't coming back from maternity leave so I had a bit of senioritis).
But if your husband is home, he can maintain the daily routine and schedule.

No not at all. I had to leave the house at 5:15am to get to work on time and it just felt like the LONGEST day. I didn't get home until 5:15 or so pm with traffic (i was in seattle at the time) and had to be in bed by 8:30pm to feel like a functioning adult. So i had about 3 hours every night. I basically got home, changed, ate dinner, packed my lunch for the next day, and went to bed. I couldn't run any errands after work without feeling like i had zero time or had to skip dinner. The day off every week was spent picking up the pieces of the previous 4 day's tornado, lol.

All I know is that I work 7:30-4:00 now. And if i worked 7:30-6:00, I would get home at 6:30 and E goes to sleep at 6:45 :bummed:

BUT if your husband is off, then that greatly lessens the load on you to do things Mon-Thurs or whenever your 10 hour shifts are!

@Smurfette: child care won't be an issue thankfully-DH is off for the summer.

@blackbird: do you mind me asking why you hated it?

My husband works 4 10s and he loves the flexibility. He doesn't work in a office setting but his coworkers all cover for each other.

I hope it works out for you!

I used to work 4 10's and I personally hated it. I worked a 6am-4:30pm shift. When I was off, it was always a Friday and the whole lab was off, so it was known that we just weren't going to be available. I would just handle it like I do now when I take a day off. Set up an out of office message saying I will be back Monday, but if it needs immediate attention, please contact so-and-so.

Nope! But I think it sounds great as long as you have someone to cover child care.

My boss is considering allowing us to work 4 10 hour shifts for the summer but wants a proposal of how it will work. There are 3 of us interested who would alternate days off, my boss would continue a regular schedule.

How do you handle issues that might arise while you're on your day off? Does someone else handle them in your absence or do you wait for the next day when you're in the office?

I SO hope this works out!!!!!
