I recommend keeping it as clean as possible
And using the cone. There's a product called vetericyn and applying it 3-4x/day to help with the healing and keeping it disinfected.

Yes, after they burst they can potentially heal and flatten on their own, but I've also seen them constantly weep/ooze until the owner decides to have it surgically removed. I'm curious how your dogs teeth cleaning is free and the growth removal isn't..unless your on a wellness plan of some sort.

@Aria: We thought it was the anal gland issue, but the vet said it was a sebaceous cyst (so thankful, since the anal gland issue could have meant cancer).

@Shannon: I am hoping that's all they need to do to it (possible some antibiotics). Her teeth cleaning is free, but the cyst removal was going to be $400!

One of my dogs has had many cysts that just randomly come and go, but those are usually located on his back and belly. And those never really burst open, they just sort of deflate. However, my other dog had one near her butt that ended up being an abscessed anal gland that definitely required a trip to the vet.

Yes! My dog had one on her belly that burst on its own. We took her to the vet who shaved the area, cleaned it up, and had her wear the cone of shame. I think she only would have been in the cone for two weeks, but when we went back for a follow up, the vet nicked the wound with the electric razor while checking it out, so we had to do another two weeks in the cone. I don't remember any ointments or medications.

I tried to keep the title as not-disgusting as possible, but fair warning, this is gross.

If there are any vets here, your input would be so valued!

Our dog has a cyst (near her butt) that we were planning to have removed during her teeth cleaning on Thursday. Today, we noticed that it bursted (hole in the center, looks fleshy). She's licked it a bit, but she isn't obsessively licking.

Her vet is totally booked until Thursday, and they suggested I put a cone on her until then.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? I'm afraid if "ignoring" it until Thursday, but I also know that bodies do a good job of healing on their own.
