@yin: Mine also just turned 5, so now I'm really curious about the medication vs age...

LO is 5 years old and has seasonal allergies. He uses Claritin daily during the worst of the season. It hasn't affected his sleep, but I'm afraid his behavior may have taken a toll. Difficult to say because he just turned 5, and his behavior tends to switch every year around his birthday (sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse).

We have to give it to LO1 most days. I'm starting to wonder if we should be worried about the long term use of it and how it affects behavior.

@Canoli: We did Claritin from 2 -3 years because that is what his ped recommended. We swtiched to Zyrtec around 3 years per their suggestion and honestly, it just seem nothing works for him in the spring. I've never noticed any side effects from either. The Claritin worked really well for about 6 months, but it doesn't seem anything works for him during the spring anymore. We're in FL and the pollen is trying to kill us.

Thanks everyone. We started our first dose yesterday and will see how it goes.

@bloved: we have been working with an allergist since last Fall when he got bronchiolitis and pneumonia and maybe has asthma and eczema started to get bad. They did some basic testing for cats, dust and 2 other things that escape my mind but he definitely has seasonal allergy symptoms. The allergist did suggest we get his adenoids looked at but at the time we didn't think it was necessary because he wasn't having these seasonal allergy symptoms but since Spring has started things have changed and it's probably something we should look into.

My girls both take it (18 mo and 4y9mo). The younger has been on it for three months now. It gives both of them so much relief. My older was also on Claritin for awhile.

I've not noticed a behavior difference. Our ped recommends Zyrtec an hour before bed as it can cause drowsiness.

I have given it to LO based on our peds recommendation, not daily, but he's had it several times, sometimes for several days in a row. It doesn't seem to change his behavior in any way.

My son takes it daily (along with a daily dose of clairtan) and I did not notice a difference in behavior (he's been on both for almost a year). However, we did not notice a lot of allergy relief either. Have you seen an ENT? we just saw one for the first time a month ago and she recommended tonsils and anoids to be removed.

We started Zyrtec for my 6 month old and it has really seemed to help. I haven't noticed any differences in his behavior or sleep

My Lo was on Claritin last year for seasonal allergies and I feel like it really disturbed his sleep. This season we have used Zyrtec and have had no side effects at all -that said he is taking less of it than he was of claritin last year so that might account for the lack of side effects. I prefer Zyrtec for myself as well as I have found it more effective.

Sorry no experience with Zyrtec for kids but my LO has seasonal allergies as well. We use Claritin for Kids (chewable) and it helps so much with her allergies and doesn't affect her behavior. Maybe ask your ped if that would be an option for your LO? For adults I do know that most feel that Claritin is not strong enough so they go to Zyrtec

Our ped just recommended that our just turned 2 year old start taking Zyrtec for what we believe is seasonal allergies. Just wondering if anyone has experience. I know all LO's react differently but my nephew was on it and it changed his behavior for the worse (became very hyperactive).
