I never got engorged at all (or felt a letdown) but I also had low supply.

My boobs weren't rock hard...they were pretty firm, but I was never in extreme pain from the hardness. I wore nipple shells (not a shield) to help draw out my nipples and help LO latch when they were engorged.

My milk came in while I was still in the hospital...I think it was at the end of day 2? I had a c section so I was there longer. I didn't even realize my milk had come in until I saw white milky mustaches on LO after our feeds!

Mine have never really been hard or engorged- and I had an oversupply at the beginning. I feel lucky, because it sounds awful. Even when LO slept for 7 hours straight, part of my boob was hard, but not the whole thing

No rock hard boobs, engorgment or leaking for me and I'm still feeding my LO at nineteen months and am a full cream dairy cow!

My theory is that the milk arrives in a more gradual fashion for those who take longer for it to come in.

@Mae: I went to a LC. When I pump without feeding I only make about 1 oz-2oz.

Mine never got hard or engorged feeling. They were fine when I went for longer between feedings, like when LO STTN. I could tell my milk came in because it was white, I was leaking, and LO fed much better. Also, at that point, LO started gaining weight instead of losing weight. My supply was fine, which I knew because LO was gaining weight well. If your supply is regulated, you should not be able to pump much after feeding, unless you have trained your breasts by pumping regularly then.

Mine only get hard when they're overly full. I did feel full/engorged randomly the first two weeks but that's bc I was EP since DS was too little to latch on and we were on a 3 hour feeding schedule.

Yes I skipped engorgement too! I saw an LC at about 4 days post partum and she said "just you wait til tomorrow, your boobs will be so engorged you won't be able to stand it!" And then the next day came, and they felt softer instead of harder so I freaked out! But my milk came in just fine and it kept steadily increasing as I pumped.

4 months here and the only time they ever get rock hard is when she sleeps for more than four hours. She also nurses still 8-10 times a day... Four big meals and lots of snacking/comfort nursing.

@littlebug: Same!

People always said you'd know when your milk came in because of the engorgement, but I was feeding around the clock so I never noticed! Only when I hand expressed and saw the milk come shooting out that I knew it was in!

@MamaMoose: I feel like this is me too. I have DDs so I feel like there is just lots of room in there.

@MrsH: how do you know if your supply is low or okay? Our ped seemed to think mine was okay I guess because I told him that I generally get 30-50ml when I pump after feeding. But I don't really know how much I should be making.

The day after my milk came in I had one spot on one boob that got hard but honestly I think it was a clogged duct rather than engorgement. Pumping and massaging with a heating pad cleared it right up. I think I just have big boobs so there was plenty of room for my milk so I never dealt with engorgement.

The only time I ever experienced the notorious rock-hard boobs was the first couple of times that D slept through the night. Cuz then I did, too, and I woke up with rock-hard boobs and milk all over my shirt.

Yes, more questions! Honestly what did people do when they had a newborn before the internet.

So it has been 7 days since my c-section and I'm confused about if my milk has fully "come in"? Everyone always says that some day you just wake up with rock hard boobs that feel hot and engorged and that's how you know your milk is in. That has not happened for me.

But!

I am making a lot more milk! This morning, LO fed for 50 min combined between both boobs (lots of good sucking and swallowing I could see and hear), and then I pumped immediately after for 15 minutes and got 50ml of milk. The pediatrician seemed happy enough with my feed times/pump output that he okay'd us stopping formula.

I know I'll keep making more and more as her needs rise... but I guess I'm just wondering if this sounds odd? That I haven't really dealt with any engorgement yet? I mean my boobs do feel a bit heavier as we get closer to feed, but sometimes LO falls asleep and refuses the 2nd boob and I have no trouble/discomfort waiting the 2-3 hours until the next feed to empty that one.
