I'm so sorry, that's scary!

Not my LO but I have some GI problems one of which is with acidity. When I have reflux symptoms it makes me feel sometimes sort of asthma symptoms. It's like I have to work hard to breathe. I've read it's not uncommon. :( Hopefully your baby will outgrow this. Mostly for now they have me managing with OTC mess since it comes and goes but sometimes it feels like those do nothing once it's already started. I think it's just that different people respond better fo certain mess over others.

@catlady I think he was about 3 weeks old at the time (I don't remember exact.y) and basically every night, my husband and I would take turns staying up with him because he was constantly having projectile spitting up and/or silent reflux, and sometimes he would do it and choke and stop crying/breathing. It was really bad one night and he had a bad coughing spell and I called our on call pediatrician at like 5am and she said we should take him into the ER to make sure he didn't aspirate.

At the ER, they did a chest xray I think? And they did an abdominal ultrasound, which showed tons of gas. He actually had this issue starting day 1 of life, we were discharged home day 3, went to his pediatrician day 4 and were sent directly to the ER for there and had a 5 day hospital stay

He had an upper GI xray series when he was 3 months. Our pediatric GI was very experienced with the symptoms we described and wanted to try different medications and/or testing. My son's case was pretty severe so we saw the ped GI very often. Our ped GI was more aggressive because he understood the severity of what we were dealing with, our ped was like "try some Zantac and thicken his bottles with oatmeal." (NOPE) But my son's case was pretty extreme.

@peaches1038: Wow that sounds similar to my LO. She's gaining and not unhappy so I actually was hesitant to agree she probably had reflux.

@peaches1038: @gilmoregirl: @MrsADS: Thank you all! It's good to know this is a distinct possibility. We are seeing a pediatric GI Wednesday for an upper GI series.

@MrsADS: May I ask what happened that your LO ended up in the ER? After answering this thread earlier, I started wondering if the zantac that my DS is on is actually enough (he is better than before but has still been continuously congested for close to 2 months now and has a scary choking cough that happens more often now than before). I asked DH about making an appointment with our pediatrician but he didn't think she could do anything unless he actually had pneumonia. Just wondering what a ped GI would do.

Yes, my reflux baby ended up in the ER too for suspected aspiration from reflux. He was constantly choking when he was little. It was terrifying. I was a wreck.

All I can say is you definitely need to see a ped GI NOW - your LO will probably be a lot better with the correct med and dosage. I love our pediatrician but I found her reflux advice to be not that great, to be honest. I was extremely assertive and asked for what I wanted and was not afraid to call myself and do what needed to be done. I found that it's easy to get mired in referrals, waiting for stuff to be done, etc. and the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

My son has reflux and most of his symptoms are respiratory. I was reluctant to start meds because he doesn't spit up or do the arching crying. But he coughs, gasps for breath and has episodes of apnea. The medication seems to help because when I took him off it, (I wasn't convinced he needed it) a lot of his symptoms returned/got worse.

Yes, LO was diagnosed with reflux after he had rsv at 3 months old and he wasn't getting better with oral steroids and breathing treatments. He had a barium swallow done and it showed that he was aspirating on his reflux. He always had it bc he would choke and sputter at the breast and spit up a ton, but bc he was gaining weight well and wasnt unhappy, the ped dismissed my concerns. He was also always congested like you mentioned. He was prescribed Zantac and it did help. I would also recommend that you see a pediatric pulmonologist as well as the GI dr. I really found refluxrebels.com to be very informative

Wow, that sounds scary. Sorry that your LO is dealing with this. My DS (almost 5 months) has had some breathing issues due to reflux but not as bad as what you describe, although he's been medicated for a long time now. That's actually how we got diagnosed in the first place. When he was only a newborn, I noticed he would gasp and choke while nursing, and we worried he was aspirating. The pediatrician diagnosed it as silent reflux and he got a prescription for zantac. In his case, the zantac helped immensely, and the breathing issues (and also epic vomit-like spit ups) only started up again when he started to outgrow his zantac dose at 2 months and again at 4 months. Each time, the pediatrician upped his meds and he got better again. I also notice that even with the meds, he is chronically congested, although he is also at daycare so it's likely he is picking up colds on top of it. Anyway, hope you find a solution for your LO soon and best of luck.

Long story short(ish), our pediatrician thought LO might have reflux based on symptoms I was describing at her 2 month appointment and prescribed Zantac. She did have some symptoms that line up with reflux - hating to be on her back, wet burps, spitting up and swallowing it, coughing - but never seemed too bothered by it. The Zantac gave her diarrhea and didn't seem to help her symptoms so we talked to the ped and decided to stop it and just see what happened since she never seemed too miserable because of the reflux.

Fast forward to 3 months and she had a random ear infection with no clear cause - no cold or fever or anything. The ped said this could have been caused by reflux, and at this point she'd started to do a lot of the typical back arching, so we decided to start omeprazole. She got her first dose Saturday. Yesterday she started having wheezing episodes when on her back and her chest was caving in when she struggled to breathe. We ended up at the ER when one of the episodes went on for 20+ minutes but we didn't get any clear answers. Chest X-ray was clear, no RSV or flu. Their thought was that she aspirated on reflux and we were told reflux can sometimes cause breathing issues.

We are following up with the ped this afternoon and I want to ask for a referral to a pediatric GI to be absolutely sure it's reflux we are dealing with, but wondering if anyone else ever experienced something similar?
