UPDATE: the hydrocele is reducing a lot but not totally gone at 9.5 months which is normal. The urologist said he's not worried, and it should be gone soon, so we are all good.

@jh524: it usually is harder on us, isn't it? :-/

My son had a hydrocele hernia and undescended testicle. Had the surgery at 9 months to clear the hernia and bring the testicle to its proper location.
The urologist will inform you more about the extra fluid/blockage/ testicle.
I agree with you, the penis is a big deal. That's why we chose to take of the problem early after it hadn't dropped by 9 months and he handled the surgery very well. The testicle couldn't drop because of the hernia. Overall, It was harder on me :/

@pachamama: My son had a "missing" testicle and hydrocele present at birth. It was mentioned at every well check until 9 months when our doctor thought it resolved itself. At 26 months we picked him up from daycare and his testicle was massive. We took him in and he had a hydrocele. We saw an urologist the next day who said a hydrocele after a year doesn't resolve itself and he needed surgery. He said that after year of age they classify (the cleveland clinic) hydroceles and hernia as the same because a hydrocele always turns into a hernia. My son had the surgery two weeks later.

Moral of that long post is until a year of age, I wouldn't worry. And the surgery was super duper quick and my son was in great spirits the next morning when he woke up. :)

ETA: My DH had a hernia on both sides at 2.5 years old. I was told there is a hereditary link.

My little guy was born with a hydrocele and "missing" testicle and everything was declared present and normal by six months although the hydrocele had disappeared much earlier.

@ladybee: he's 11 weeks. The hydrocele appeared around 5 weeks.
@skipra: Ahh gotcha. This all seems benign but I want to make sure he doesn't have any permanent issues... A penis is a big deal!!

@pachamama: No, it's in the groin on the side. I think usually or almost always right side? It puffs out and looks swollen sometimes and sometimes you can't see it at all. But he does have an outie belly button that I wonder is a small hernia? No doctor has ever said anything about it.

My son has this (and, actually, the belly button hernia (umbilical hernia), but they're not related - I think the inguinal hernia is one in the groin). He's 2 weeks old now. We saw a pediatrician yesterday who said it was reasonably common and would probably go away on its own by 6 months. We're supposed to keep an eye out for any noticeable sudden changes but otherwise were told not to worry (the hernia, too, will go away on its own at some point before he turns 2).

Yes, my son had hydrocele when he was little and the pediatrician kept a good eye on it for the first year. It eventually went down on its own and we have not (so far) had any issues with it yet.

My son had an iguineal (SP?) hernia and hydrocele. Not sure if it is similar or related. I hadn't heard anything about the hydrocele until after his hernia repair surgery and just that his ped wondered about it as it wasn't a big deal. Maybe on its own they don't normally do anything but will take care of it if there is anything else going on.

My sister's son is having surgery for a hydrocele later in April. I'm not sure why exactly they opted for surgery as opposed to letting it go down on its own, but she said it was a relatively simple surgery. He is almost 17 months.

@pachamama: My friend's baby had this. From what I recall, there was no treatment. It was totally benign and went away on its own, maybe when he was around 9 months?

I haven't found a lot of information on this online so I thought I'd reach out here. My son's scrotum basically has extra fluid... they look swollen and kind of watery. The PA said it's no big deal and very common but idk...
we are going to a urologist soon. Does anyone have experience with this scrotal issue? Sounds kind of funny when I say it :silly:
