Also Canadian lol

They put the first diaper on them and we had a hand knitted hat for each baby. They were kitted by volunteers.

My youngest actually has three becaus each nurse debated the fit of his hat.

Wow the variances are incredible. I'd say I had a "normal" experience. Although my room was brand new and felt very much like a hotel with a nice private bathroom. The nurses were generous with supplies and totally encouraged us to take lots of diapers and stuff home. The food was good enough and DH was allowed to eat whatever he wanted as well. We did get a cute Red Sox hat for the baby (the hospital is the official hospital of the Red Sox) but otherwise, no other swag. I did get a giant cup too.

I got one oversized pad, one peri bottle, one sample tube of vaseline, and one sample sized bottle of baby wash. I was also given a little sample envelope of a nipple cream when I asked them if they could give me anything for the discomfort I was experiencing while trying to nurse. My hospital registration package specifically said to bring pads/diapers/wipes/etc as they don't supply them.

I had been hoping for a private room since my insurance covers it, but they were full beyond their capacity and didn't have one available, so my husband was not able to stay with me overnight. Overall, I was pretty happy to get out of there and go home!

Um , wow this thread makes me want to scope out my nearby hospitals some more...

We went home with a little plastic tub to bathe the baby, couple sample size vaseline packets, whatever was left of our diapers and wipes packs, the baby hat and mittens, and snot-sucker. I got the rest of the bag of mesh panties and incredibly long pads.

While we were there, I was allowed 3 meals from the cafeteria delivered and I got one extra a day for a guest. And I did order the steak, but it was like 4 oz and I was STARVING.

I am so jealous of the ladies that got massages!

@bhbee: I know! I literally had to tell her that there was blood on my current ones. When I went to take that first post-birth shower there was no way I was putting old ones back on! I didn't have a "pack" in my room, it was literally just one pair that the nurse brought in.

Ours was great with the size 1 diapers! We never used NB either! They did tell me that once the "package" is open they obviously can't save it or reuse the rest so you can take that home!

@T.H.O.U.: My nurse saw that I only had a couple pairs left in the pack that was in my room that I would be taking home. She poked them into my hospital bag, and said she'd be right back. She came back with a new pack saying something about how I was out and needed a new pack. She was my hero!

I got the side eye for asking for size 1 diapers last time. They probably thought I was stocking up for home. But that little guy was 9lb13oz 23” and his buns were not completely covered by newborn size :silly:

These responses very so much, it's very interesting to read through!
Love the idea of a massage therapist, and a nice steak dinner!

My hospital was a catholic hospital, midwest, city of 58,000.
We got private rooms, one for labor, one for recovery. The food was decent, DH did get a ticket for one meal included but never used it. Soda/water/coffee was free as well.

It seems even the 'standard' care differs quite a bit, especially between countries!

I delivered my son in Switzerland and while it was nice, it was really bare bones in terms of extra supplies. The best thing they did was to not charge us for the private room upgrade. I was there for 4 days and it would have been $1000 but we never received a bill for it.

Nothing too special. I was just happy that even though I had missed the breakfast order, they immediately found a tray and brought it in to me.

They were SO stingy with the mesh undies. On day 2 of my stay I asked for a new pair (because yea, I like to change my undies daily) they gave me the side eye!

The massage therapist was amazing - I think she came twice? We were told during the birth class to try to go into labor during the week since she didn't work weekends  We got a "birthday cake" and fruit basket and a special meal one night too. Plus a onesie saying "I was born at X hospital." Then the usual supplies and hat. It was a very nice experience at a very small local hospital.

Nothing too fancy, but I had a private room, so DH got to stay with me every night. Lots of supplies (mesh undies, pads, few bottles of formula for DS, baby blankets (only kept 1 though), and some diapers I think. I was able to order food (free for me) and have it brought to my room. Also a tote bag that and some things in it, but never used any of it.

Yea, we didn't have fancy dinners or massages, the only true bad experience I had was the "nipple Nazi" nurse. If you were a breast feeding mom, they didn't supply a bottle for anything, the nipple Nazi even made us cup feed colostrum instead of offering me the option of a bottle. I didn't find out until the 3rd day that you could refuse cup feeding and get a bottle as a BF mom.

This thread is crazy! I had no idea that massages and fancy dinners were a thing. My postpartum experience was awful. They woke us up at 2am to test baby's bili levels after I asked the afternoon nurse and she refused. That same nurse denied me Tylenol and said I didn't need to alternate Tylenol and Ibuprofen, even though the doctor had a script for exactly that. I was too exhausted from a 40+ hour labor and a baby that didn't sleep (also, no nursery) to advocate for myself. It was a horrible experience as far as the service that was provided postpartum that I didn't care about the goods!

ETA: I'm in the US, delivered at a non-university, non-metro hospital. I really don't think these perks are the norm in the US outside of metro areas.

Wow these are crazy! We just got stuff they would have thrown out I think like open diapers and the peri bottle. Which was ok by me honestly, my house is already full of enough junk :silly: My mom saved the menu from their “fancy dinner” when I was born in my baby book. I just assumed that was a thing of the past!

My first two were both born at teaching/university hospitals. I wonder if that makes a difference? This time my ob moved to a hospital with a brand new Women’s wing and I wonder if it will be fancier.

@erinbaderin: RIGHT?! Fellow Canadian here and this thread is blowing my mind....though I realize we don’t have to pay for anything other than a room upgrade. We had to fight to get a private room, ask for a tiny thing of diaper cream, and as the partner I wasn’t allowed to use the bathroom in the room (I did anyway!) or even have a glass of water from the communal kitchenette. DW got standard hospital food (I couldn’t get anything) and we got a half pack of leftover diapers, a peri bottle and a sitz bath...maybe a couple leftover pre made formula bottles to take home? I had no idea US hospitals offered a fancy dinner and massages

The above and beyond thing I got with my 2nd babe, who was born in Austria, was a Do Not Disturb sign for my door. After my doctor made his evening rounds, I would hang it on my door and rest/sleep until the next morning (with baby in room). It was soooo nice compared to my experience in NYC, when people were walking in and out of the room at all hours, ensuring that I didn’t get any meaningful amount of sleep.

My hospital didn’t do anything above and beyond. The only pleasantly memorable thing was their postpartum drink selection; I remember their iced tea was top notch.

I mostly just wanted to get out of there because it was so exhausting being interrupted every hour. My husband made some kind of threat that kept them out for a three hour stretch once, but it didn’t last.

Honestly, I don’t really care about free supplies. If they could just help me rest and listen to my concerns, I’d be more appreciative.

For my first born the only “above and beyond” thing we got was an A&A swaddle blanket emblazoned with the hospital name/logo.

For my 2nd we were at a different hospital and we got fancier swag. I was hooked up with way more supplies that are pretty standard.
But also, and this was crazy, but a Chanel gift. It had a drawstring Chanel pouch, a full size Chanel No 5, and a mascara. Ive always heard about it at this hospital but thought it was a myth.
They also gave us a diaper bag with hospital branding and I think it had some little baby supplies in it - and a onesie with the hospital name. But for sure the Chanel gifts were above and beyond.

ETA: to clarify - the Chanel swag was provided by Chanel. They give them to the best women’s hospital every year or something like that. And this hospital gets it like every year.
