We rented a little cottage on squantz pond it was so peaceful. It's not too remote that you won't see anyone, but just quiet enough to remind you you're not in the hustle and bustle. I was in a town called Peekskill, and it was heaven for me. Lots of nature for daily run/hiking breaks (I was right across the river from Bear Mountain), Victorian architecture, an adorable historic downtown (with a soda fountain!), and even a few great restaurants. It's right off the MetroNorth to get back and forth to the city as needed.
