We try to be friendly with our neighbors, but my husband has given up. He always says good morning to people that he meets walking to his car in our complex and no one EVER says it back to him. I don't know what's wrong with people.

We've rented in both Boston and outside NYC. In Boston we were in a brownstone and knew the neighbors downstairs. I attributed it to the fact that it was a small building. In the NYC area, we've been in very large managed buildings and have never known our neighbors. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen the current ones in the past 2 years!

i'm from MA too=)

we live in an apartment. we're on the top floor and i only speak to the people on the bottom floor on the other side of the building. mostly because they are the only other household that speaks english, so some of the other people smile and wave or nod their heads at me, but we don't really communicate.

I've always had luck with friendly apartment neighbors except for when I lived in DC. Charlottesville, New York, Toronto I've made friends that I still keep in touch with.

We own and are pretty friendly with people. We have a shared garden area so that's where I met most of the people I know - just being in the right place at the right time when people are walking dogs or whatever.

Somehow I ended up on the condo board so now I feel like I know most of the people, although maybe some of them actually hate me LOL

My "across the street" neighbor, aka across the hall is my SIL. We USED to be friendly until she moved in next to me, now she's worn out her welcome. I wish awful things upon my upstairs neighbors, and I'm scared to meet my downstairs neighbors b/c I can hear the guy yelling at his wife every night lol, the woman under my SIL and I are "friendly", she knows my name, DH's name and the dog's name and talks to us when she sees me taking the dog out.

Overall I don't talk to my neighbors because they're all so loud, I wouldn't have nice things to say to them :)

Nope, not yet (we moved to a new building 3 months ago). We never really see our neighbors! Which is too bad, because the woman (it's a couple) is due the month after me! There is one couple in the building that I'm friendly with, but not to the extent that we would go out to dinner with them or anything. But I'm hoping that when LO comes, I'll connect with some of the other moms in the building. But in all the buildings I've lived in, I've never been really more than passingly friendly with my neighbors (saying, hi how are you, making small talk about the weather, etc).

I live in Boston. DH and I are pretty outgoing and friendly and say "hi" to just about everyone. If someone strikes up a conversation and we become friendly with them, cool - if not, that's fine, too. We have some neighbors that we hang outside and chat with and some we barely see/talk to.

I only lived in an apt in college, and I was friendly with my neighbors. I think it will just depends. DH is a very outgoing, friendly person so thanks to him I think we'll always be friendly with our neighbors no matter what.

When we still lived in our apartment we were friendly with our neighbors on one side of us, but not the other. The ones we weren't friendly with were so loud! They played music every day at the same time for a few hours. We could hear it in our entire apartment. I always gave them dirty looks.

We are moving from Boston to Chicago in 2 wks, and last night the hubs and I were discussing whether or not we would become friendly with our new neighbors.

We're friendly with our current neighbors but were wondering if it's more a function of people in condo buildings tending to be more open than in rentals? I've lived in rental buildings in NYC and Boston, and have never gotten to know my neighbors until we bought our condo.

How about you? Are you friendly with your neighbors, and do you own or rent? And where? We're wondering if people in the midwest really ARE friendlier :)
